First Look: Channel 5 Unveils Images for Murder Mystery ‘Murder Before Evensong’

by Dave Elliott

If you’re already mourning the fact that ‘Grantchester’ is heading into its final season, fear not. Channel 5 has something lined up to help fill that ecclesiastical crime-solving hole in your life. The broadcaster has dropped the first-look images for Murder Before Evensong, a brand-new six-part murder mystery based on the Sunday Times best-selling novel by the Reverend Richard Coles, and starring Matthew Lewis (Harry Potter, All Creatures Great and Small).

Set in 1980s England, ‘Murder Before Evensong’ introduces Canon Daniel Clement (Lewis), the Rector of Champton, whose quiet parish life is turned upside down when a dead body is discovered in his church. Suddenly entangled in a murder case, Daniel must balance his duties as a priest with his unexpected new role as amateur sleuth.

Daniel lives at the rectory with his widowed mother Audrey (played by Amanda Redman (New Tricks)) and his two dachshunds, Cosmo and Hilda. When he announces a plan to modernise the church, his parish becomes divided. Things only get darker when the body count begins to rise. With tensions high and suspicion all around, Daniel is forced to hold his fractured community together while working alongside the police to track down a killer.

Joining Lewis and Redman in the cast are Amit Shah (Happy Valley) as DS Neil Vanloo, Adam James (The Day of the Jackal) as Bernard De Floures, Meghan Treadway (One Day) as Honor De Floures, Alexander Delamain as Alex De Floures, Marion Bailey (The Crown) as Kath, Amanda Hadingue (Kaos) as Dora, Tamzin Outhwaite (The Wives) as Stella Harper, Francis Magee (Kin) as Edgy, and Nina Toussaint-White (Showtrial) as Jane Thwaite.

The series has been adapted by Nick Hicks-Beach (Lewis, DCI Banks, Midsomer Murders) and directed by David Moore (Fool Me Once, Outlander, Shetland, Marple). It is executive produced by Radford Neville and Reverend Richard Coles for The Lighthouse, alongside Catherine Mackin and Don Klees for Acorn TV/Acorn Media Enterprises, and Sebastian Cardwell and Paul Testar for Paramount UK/Channel 5. Filming took place in the West Midlands with support from the West Midlands Production Fund.

‘Murder Before Evensong’ will air on 5 in the UK this autumn, and on Acorn TV in the US and Canada.

Murder Before Evensong’ Season 1 premieres this Autumn 2025 on Channel 5 in the UK. If you want to keep track of this or any other shows, you can add them via our Never Miss system, and you’ll be notified when it gets a UK premiere date. Visit Never Miss.
