Channel 4 Commissions New Steven Moffat Drama ‘Number 10’

by Dave Elliott

Channel 4 has announced a new drama from Steven Moffat (Sherlock, Dracula, Inside Man) and Hartswood Films, titled Number 10, which will take viewers inside the most famous address in the world.

10 Downing Street. The press release describes it as a house with “a Prime Minister in the attic, a coffee bar in the basement, and a wallpapered labyrinth of romance, crisis and heartbreak in-between.” There are mice, a nuclear deterrent, and a lift that never works. The government will be fictional, but the crises will feel all too real.

The show promises to blend biting political drama with satirical edge, featuring not just the Prime Minister, but also the conspiracy theorist running the cafe, the lift repairman, power-hungry advisors squabbling over cupboard offices, and, naturally, the cat.

Sue Vertue, executive producer for Hartswood Films, commented:

“We are excited to be working with Channel 4 on Number 10, which is a passion project for Steven. He says there are three famous doors in the world; he’s done 221B Baker Street and the TARDIS – now he’s going to do the real one.”

Gwawr Lloyd, Acting Head of Drama at Channel 4, added:

“We’re thrilled to be bringing Number 10 to Channel 4, a bold, brilliant and witty new drama from the exceptional mind of Steven Moffat and the powerhouse team at Hartswood Films. Number 10 will offer a rare glimpse behind the doors of the world’s most iconic political residences which will take viewers from the high-stakes decisions of leadership to the lives of the staff who keep the house running. An insightful and entertaining twist on a state of the nation drama.”

The series will be produced by Hartswood Films, part of ITV Studios, in association with ITV Studios who will also handle distribution. Lawrence Till (The Devil’s Hour, The Young Offenders) serves as producer, with Ben Palmer (Douglas Is Cancelled, The Inbetweeners) directing. Executive producers are Steven Moffat and Sue Vertue.

Casting and transmission details will be revealed later.
