Filming has kicked off on the highly anticipated second series of ‘Ludwig’ , the BBC’s smash hit comedy-drama starring David Mitchell (Peep Show, Back) and Anna Maxwell Martin (Motherland, Line of Duty).
Created and written by Mark Brotherhood, the series is produced by Big Talk Studios (part of ITV Studios) in collaboration with That Mitchell and Webb Company. The first run was the BBC’s biggest scripted series of 2024, pulling in over 9.5 million viewers (28-day figure) and marking the strongest comedy launch on the channel since at least 2018. It’s also become a global success story, airing in 85 international markets and ranking as the number one season premiere in total viewership and unique viewers on BritBox North America in 2025.
A New Puzzle for Ludwig
Series two picks up from the dramatic conclusion of the first season. Master puzzle-setter John ‘Ludwig’ Taylor (David Mitchell) is now an official Crime Scene Consultant for the Cambridge Police Authority, tackling the so-called “impossible” crimes. Free from pretending to be his missing twin brother James, John is more “Ludwig” than ever! Dazzling at cracking mysteries, hopeless at everything else.
However, with James still missing and police resources off-limits for personal matters, John’s quest for answers becomes even trickier. That doesn’t stop him, nor his sister-in-law Lucy (Anna Maxwell Martin), from continuing the search. The masquerade may be over, but a new mystery is only just beginning.
Returning Faces and New Additions
Alongside Mitchell and Maxwell Martin, fan favourites returning for the second series include Dipo Ola (We Hunt Together) as DCI Russell Carter, Dylan Hughes as Henry Betts-Taylor, Dorothy Atkinson (Call the Midwife) as DCS Carol Shaw, Ralph Ineson (The Witch) as Chief Constable Ziegler, and Karl Pilkington (Sick of It) as DI Matt Neville.
New regulars joining the team are Mark Bonnar (Dept. Q, Guilt) as newspaper editor Gareth Fisher, Sian Clifford (Fleabag, The Ballad of Wallis Island) as local MP Joanne Kemper, Ben Ashenden (Deep Cover, Black Mirror) as DC Ethan Cole, and Rumi Sutton (After the Flood, Mutiny) as DC Caitlin Sullivan.
Behind the Camera
The six-part series is again written by Mark Brotherhood, with directing duties split between George Kane (episodes 1-3) and Stella Corradi (episodes 4-6). Executive producers include Kenton Allen and Toby Welch for Big Talk Studios, Mark Brotherhood, David Mitchell, Kathryn O’Connor, and Chris Sussman, alongside Robert Schildhouse and Stephen Nye for BritBox, and Claus Wunn and Frank Seyberth for ZDF. Georgie Fallon returns as producer, with Anya Wilson as co-producer, and Tanya Qureshi as Commissioning Editor for the BBC.
