Sky has unveiled the first teaser trailer for its lavish new event series ‘Amadeus’, a bold reimagining of Peter Shaffer’s acclaimed play, arriving on Sky and streaming service NOW this December.
The five-part Sky Original stars Will Sharpe (Giri/Haji, The White Lotus) as the mercurial musical genius Wolfgang ‘Amadeus’ Mozart, Paul Bettany (WandaVision, A Very British Scandal) as his embittered rival Antonio Salieri, and Gabrielle Creevy (In My Skin, Black Doves) as Mozart’s fiercely devoted wife, Constanze Weber.
Adapted by Joe Barton (Black Doves, Giri/Haji, The Lazarus Project), ‘Amadeus’ retells the story of the legendary composer’s meteoric rise and tragic downfall. The series promises a fresh and visceral take on the rivalry between Mozart and Salieri, capturing the electric energy of 18th-century Vienna with a modern sensibility.
When a 25-year-old Mozart arrives in Vienna, eager to break free from his past as a child prodigy, he meets two figures who will shape his fate: his future wife Constanze and the devoutly religious court composer Salieri. As Mozart’s brilliance dazzles audiences and provokes envy at court, Salieri becomes consumed by jealousy. What begins as professional competition spirals into a dangerous obsession spanning three decades, culminating in a chilling confession of murder and a desperate attempt to immortalise himself through Mozart’s legacy.
Joining Sharpe, Bettany and Creevy are Rory Kinnear (The Diplomat, Skyfall), Lucy Cohu (Becoming Jane), Jonathan Aris (The Sixth Commandment), Ényì Okoronkwo (Renegade Nell, The Lazarus Project), Jessica Alexander (The Little Mermaid), Hugh Sachs (Bridgerton), Paul Bazely (Such Brave Girls), Rupert Vansittart (Game of Thrones), Anastasia Martin (In From The Cold), Nancy Farino (Masters of the Air), Olivia-Mai Barrett (Invasion), Viola Prettejohn (The Crown), and Jyuddah Jaymes (The Boys in the Boat, Hijack).
‘Amadeus’ is produced by Two Cities Television (part of STV Studios) in association with Sky Studios. Executive producers include Megan Spanjian for Sky Studios, Michael Jackson (Patrick Melrose), Stephen Wright (Blue Lights), John Griffin, and directors Julian Farino (Giri/Haji) and Alice Seabright (Chloe, Sex Education). Barton, Sharpe, Bettany and Farino also serve as executive producers, with Seabright as co-executive producer.
