This week on Geektown Radio, Dave is joined by Matt for another packed episode of TV, film, and gaming chat. From Apple’s tense new thriller ‘The Last Frontier’, to Sky’s supernatural mystery ‘Revival’, the biggest reveals from New York Comic Con 2025, and the beer-brewing sim Ale Abbey, there’s plenty to pour over.
They also chat about Foundation’s jaw-dropping finale, Invasion Season 3, and The Dragon Prince’s new episodes, alongside a round-up of the latest renewals and upcoming premieres.
The Last Frontier
Apple TV’s latest drama, ‘The Last Frontier’ has caught Dave’s attention, a tense thriller set in Alaska following a U.S. Marshal forced to deal with the aftermath of a crashed prison transport plane.
“It’s from the people that made The Blacklist,” Dave explains. “You’ve got Jason Clarke in the lead, and Dominic Cooper doing an American accent, which is interesting. It’s got that proper mystery feel to it.”
The plane crash unleashes a host of dangerous prisoners, one of whom was secretly added to the flight at the last minute. As the Marshal investigates, he uncovers more questions than answers, setting up a chilly game of cat and mouse.
“It’s a nice little mystery thing going on,” says Dave. “Rather enjoyed the opening two episodes. Ten episodes in total, running through to December.”
Matt agrees it sounds like a promising start, especially with Clarke and Cooper leading the cast, and both note that Apple continues to deliver strong original dramas with distinctive ideas and impressive production values.
Revival
The pair also take a look at ‘Revival’, the new Sky Max series based on the comic book that asks what happens when the dead simply come back.
“It’s one of those shows we used to get loads of a few years ago,” Dave says. “The dead return, but they’re not zombies, just people trying to live their old lives again, except with regenerative healing powers.”
Melanie Scrofano (Wynonna Earp) stars as Deputy Dana Cypress, reluctantly pulled back into her small Wisconsin hometown just as the impossible begins. With David James Elliott (JAG) as her sheriff father, and a guest turn from Stephen Ogg (The Walking Dead), it’s the kind of eerie, low-budget sci-fi that Sky does best.
“It’s got that old-school Syfy Channel feel,” Dave adds. “Not high-end, but fun and watchable. I really enjoyed it.”
Matt admits he misses the days when networks were filled with shows like The Returned and Resurrection. “It’s nice to see that idea getting another run,” he says.
NYCC 2025 Roundup
Over in the news, the team dives into the huge wave of announcements from New York Comic Con 2025, with both Marvel and DC dropping new footage and premiere dates.
Marvel confirmed Wonder Man for January, Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 for March 2026, and the final part of the WandaVision trilogy, VisionQuest, for late 2026, with Paul Bettany returning as White Vision and James Spader reprising his role as Ultron.
“It’s one of the most interesting things Marvel’s doing right now,” Matt says. “They’ve been playing with the idea of identity and memory since WandaVision. I’ve got loads of questions about where this one goes.”
They also covered DC’s upcoming animated adaptation of ‘Batman: Knightfall’, which introduces Bane and reshapes Batman’s mythology, and the debut of ‘Star Trek: Starfleet Academy’ coming to Paramount+ in January 2026.
“It’s set in the Discovery universe,” Dave explains. “Paul Giamatti’s in it, and Stephen Colbert is voicing the Digital Dean of Students. I love that idea.”
Between the trailers for Pluribus (from Breaking Bad’s Vince Gilligan), Malice starring David Duchovny and Jack Whitehall, and even confirmation of Invincible Season 4, it’s a convention recap bursting with geeky goodness.
Ale Abbey
To finish, Dave talks about the indie game Ale Abbey, a quirky new management sim that combines monastery life with the noble art of brewing beer.
“It’s basically if you ever wanted to run a medieval monastery but with more beer,” he laughs. “It’s part brewing sim, part management game, with monks, nuns, and about twenty beer styles to master.”
Players must balance recipes, manage brewing temperatures, and keep their monks happy (and tipsy). Think Oxygen Not Included, but holier and much drunker.
“I’d say it’s Oxygen Not Included if everyone’s a monk and slightly drunk,” Dave adds.
Renewals, Cancellations & TV News
The lads also cover a flurry of news from across the TV landscape.
Prime Video has cancelled both ‘Countdown’, starring Jensen Ackles, and ‘Butterfly’, starring Daniel Dae Kim, after just one season each. Dave admits he isn’t shocked by either:
“Countdown was fine, a bit of fun, but it was missing a proper hook. And Butterfly just didn’t get promoted enough.”
Over on Showtime, Yellowjackets will end with its upcoming fourth season, though it’s being billed as a creative conclusion rather than a cancellation.
“They always said they had a five-season plan,” Matt says. “But the end of Season 3 worked well enough that they can wrap things up cleanly. I’m glad it’s finishing on its own terms.”
Paramount+ officially renewed ‘Dexter: Resurrection’ for Season 2, following the success of its first run. The Buccaneers has also been renewed for Season 3 on Apple, while Marvel’s ‘X-Men 97’ will return for a third season.
Fans of long-running crime drama ‘Midsomer Murders’ also had reason to celebrate, as ITV commissioned a 26th season, even though the UK is still waiting for Season 24 to air.
“It’s one of those shows that’s always slightly behind here,” Dave notes. “It airs everywhere else first, which is bizarre for something so British.”
Wrapping Up
With plenty of sci-fi, fantasy, and geeky goodness to dissect, this week’s episode is a proper mix of mystery, mayhem, and malted barley. Whether you’re into high-stakes thrillers like The Last Frontier, quirky supernatural dramas like Revival, or just fancy running a pixelated monastery in Ale Abbey, there’s something for every kind of geek in this one.
