5USA Brings ‘Law & Order Toronto: Criminal Intent’ To UK Screens This December

5USA is gearing up for a sharp new slice of crime drama as ‘Law & Order Toronto: Criminal Intent‘ makes its proper UK broadcast debut this December. The series has technically been available before, but only via LG Channels on select LG smart TVs running webOS from 2016 onwards. That meant only a tiny fraction of households ever had access. This is the first time the show will actually land on a mainstream UK channel, finally giving viewers the chance to see what Canada has done with one of television’s most iconic crime brands.

Based on the long-running Law & Order: Criminal Intent format created by Dick Wolf and developed for television by Rene Balcer, ‘Law & Order Toronto: Criminal Intent’ relocates the psychological cat-and-mouse structure to Canada’s largest metropolis. The series originally premiered on Citytv, where it became the biggest primetime debut of the season and the number one primetime premiere on the network. It has already been renewed all the way through Season 4, which says plenty about how well it has connected with audiences at home.

Season 1 follows the city’s Specialist Criminal Investigations Unit, led by Detective Sergeants Henry Graff, played by Aden Young (Rectify), and Frankie Bateman, played by Kathleen Munroe (City on Fire). The duo investigate high-profile homicides across the worlds of high finance, politics, real estate, media and more. Cases are cracked not through car chases or shootouts, but through behavioural analysis and psychological pressure. Fans of the original Criminal Intent will recognise the focus on motive and criminal mindset, just with a distinctly Toronto flavour.

Behind the scenes, the series is produced by Lark Productions and Cameron Pictures Inc. in association with Universal International Studios and Citytv. NBCUniversal Global TV Distribution handles international sales, including this 5USA pickup. Tassie Cameron serves as showrunner and executive producer, with Erin Haskett, Amy Cameron, Alex Patrick, David Valleau and Tex Antonucci also among the producing team.
