Amazon Orders A Brand New ‘Stargate’ TV Series As Martin Gero Leads The Franchise Into A New Era

Prime Video has officially opened the gate to a brand new ‘Stargate‘ television series, giving a full series order to a fresh chapter in the iconic sci fi universe. The new instalment comes from Martin Gero, a long time veteran of the franchise and the creator of NBC’s Blindspot, who will serve as creator, writer, executive producer, and showrunner. It marks the first time since ‘Stargate Universe’ ended that the franchise has moved forward with a full scale television commission, and this time it is under Amazon MGM Studios, who have been quietly planning this revival since acquiring MGM back in 2022.

Gero is joined by executive producers Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell for Safehouse Pictures (Obi Wan Kenobi, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters), as well as Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich, the duo behind the 1994 feature film that started it all. Long-time creative leads Brad Wright and Joe Mallozzi will return as consulting producers, tying this new chapter directly to the DNA of the previous shows.

Prime Video has been steadily mining MGM’s library, but this is the one fans have been waiting years to hear about, and the news arrived with something extra: reassurance that this is not a reboot, but a continuation.

During a special announcement stream hosted by Darren Sumner of GateWorld and David Read of Dial the Gate, Gero and the creative team provided their first real clarity on what fans should expect. Asked directly if the show was a reboot, the response was crystal clear:
“It is not a reboot. It is not a reboot. It is a brand new chapter.”

This is set to be a new story within the existing ‘Stargate’ universe, designed for both long-time fans and brand new viewers. As Gero explained in the video segment:
“For us, it’s really important to not only have it so that the fans feel like, this is my Stargate, this is the Stargate I’ve been waiting 14 years for, but that a brand new audience can come in without having to have watched 350 episodes of an amazing show.”

The announcement also came with heartfelt thanks to the fandom. Gero said:
“For those who’ve kept the gate active through conventions, rewatches, and unwavering faith, this one’s for you. And for those that are new to our world, I promise you’re in for something extraordinary.”

Brad Wright and Joe Mallozzi echoed that gratitude, noting how the community kept the interest alive through fourteen years of uncertainty. Wright summed up the fan connection beautifully:
“Their enthusiasm for Stargate has never waned. Hardly a day ever went by when someone would ask me, when is new Stargate coming out”
and added the joy of finally being able to tell them it was coming.

The team also made it clear that familiar faces will be addressed later, but nothing is ready to be revealed yet. The priority right now is setting expectations and making sure fans know they are not being ignored.

From the production side, the scale is about to get bigger than ever. Visual effects, technology and the global reach of Prime Video all play into what Gero described as a long overdue evolution.
“We’re going to be able to do things that we could not do in 1997. We’re going to be able to do almost anything, in terms of visual effects and everything our imagination can come up with now.”

Nick Pepper, Head of US SVOD TV Development at Amazon MGM Studios, added in the official statement:
“Stargate is an enduring, iconic franchise that has captivated audiences for decades with its bold exploration of humanity’s place in the cosmos. One that honours the series’ rich legacy while propelling it into an ambitious and emotionally resonant future.”

This is also one of the first new commissions under Amazon’s new Head of Global TV, Peter Friedlander, signalling that the studio is prepared to put real weight behind revitalising classic MGM properties.

For fans, this is a rare moment. The old guard is involved. The creative team respects what came before. The series will be global from day one. And it is not a reboot. As the video concluded, Gero promised:
“We can talk for hours, and I just want it to be a first taste with you guys to share the excitement. We’re back, it’s happening. It’s going to be incredible.”
