HBO Orders A Second Season Of Brad Ingelsby’s Crime Drama ‘Task’

by Dave Elliott

HBO is heading back to the working-class suburbs of Philadelphia as the acclaimed crime drama Task has officially been renewed for a second season. The gritty series, created by Brad Ingelsby and led by Emmy winner Mark Ruffalo (Poor Things, I Know This Much Is True), has seen huge critical and audience momentum since its debut, becoming one of HBO’s top three fastest-growing first seasons.

The first season of ‘Task’ already aired in the UK on Sky Atlantic and NOW, where it picked up a strong following. However, with HBO Max due to launch in the UK next year, it remains unclear whether Season Two will continue on Sky or shift to the new Warner Bros Discovery streaming service. Either way, UK audiences should expect it to find a home here.

In the USA, all episodes are available to stream on Max, and the series has earned widespread praise. GQ called it “the show of the year”, Entertainment Weekly highlighted its “phenomenal cast”, and The Wall Street Journal described the series as “one of the year’s best crime thrillers.”

Speaking during today’s press presentation in New York City, Casey Bloys confirmed the drama’s return, with Francesca Orsi adding in the official quote: “We knew well in advance of its launch that we had a powerful drama series on our hands, but it has been so rewarding to witness the audience’s fervor and embrace of this show as it grew week after week. Rarely does a writer balance humanistic storytelling with intricate, explosive plotting but Brad Ingelsby is one of our industry’s greats and we have no doubt he will strike as profoundly and addictively once again in season two.”

Creator and showrunner Brad Ingelsby followed with his own full statement: “We’ve been incredibly fortunate to have HBO’s unwavering support of TASK from the very first script onwards, throughout production, and during their extraordinary launch of our first season to audiences. They are an unmatched creative home. On behalf of the entire TASK team, in front of and behind the camera, I am honoured and excited to get back to work on a second season of our show.”

‘Task’ follows an FBI agent played by Mark Ruffalo as he heads up a Task Force tracking a series of violent robberies carried out by a seemingly ordinary family man, played by Tom Pelphrey (Love and Death). The tense first season also starred Emilia Jones (Locke and Key), Jamie McShane (Bloodline), Sam Keeley (Kin), Thuso Mbedu (The Woman King), Fabien Frankel (House of the Dragon), Alison Oliver (Saltburn), Raúl Castillo (Cha Cha Real Smooth), Silvia Dionicio (The Same Storm), Phoebe Fox (The Great), and Martha Plimpton (The Righteous Gemstones).

Behind the camera, the series is steered by creator, writer, showrunner and executive producer Brad Ingelsby. Directors Jeremiah Zagar and Salli Richardson Whitfield executive produce, alongside Paul Lee and Mark Roybal for wiip, Mark Ruffalo, David Crockett and Ron Schmidt. Nicole Jordan Webber and Jeremy Yaches serve as co-executive producers for Public Record.

There is no confirmed UK broadcaster or platform for Season Two of ‘Task’. It may return to Sky Atlantic, or it may migrate to HBO Max when the streamer launches in the UK next year.

Task‘ does not yet have a premiere date for Season 2, and its UK broadcaster is not confirmed. If you want to keep track of this or any other shows, you can add them via our Never Miss system, and you will be notified when it gets a UK premiere date. Visit Never Miss.
