HBO has handed fans of Westeros a mighty early Christmas present as ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms‘ and ‘House of the Dragon‘ secure fresh renewals, locking in new seasons every year through 2028. The announcement came during a press presentation in New York, confirming that Westeros is not going anywhere any time soon.
The move ensures HBO’s two flagship Game of Thrones universe dramas continue to expand George R R Martin’s colossal mythos for years to come, with A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms landing a second season before its first has even aired, and House of the Dragon earning a fourth ahead of its third season premiere.
Francesca Orsi, EVP HBO Programming, captured the mood of the network’s confidence with the quote, “We are thrilled to be able to deliver new seasons of these two series for the next three years, for the legion of fans of the ‘Game of Thrones’ universe. Together, HOUSE OF THE DRAGON and A KNIGHT OF THE SEVEN KINGDOMS reveal just how expansive and richly imagined George R R Martin’s universe continues to be. In January, I think audiences will be delighted by the inspiring underdog tale of Dunk and Egg that George and Ira Parker have captured so beautifully. And this summer, HOUSE OF THE DRAGON is set to ignite once again with some of its most epic battles yet.”
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms
The new half-hour drama follows Ser Duncan “Dunk” the Tall and young Egg, the unlikely duo whose travels take them into the heart of Westerosi folklore. Season one stars Peter Claffey (Bad Sisters) as Dunk and Dexter Sol Ansell (The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes) as Egg, joined by Daniel Ings (I Hate Suzie), Bertie Carvel (Doctor Foster), Danny Webb (Alien 3), Sam Spruell (Fargo), Shaun Thomas (The Selfish Giant), Finn Bennett (True Detective: Night Country), Edward Ashley (The Lost City of Z), Tanzyn Crawford (The Clearing), Henry Ashton (The Last Kingdom), Youssef Kerkour (Home), Tom Vaughan-Lawlor (Avengers: Infinity War), and Daniel Monks (The Devil’s Bath).
The series is created by George R R Martin and showrunner Ira Parker, with Martin, Parker, Sarah Bradshaw, Owen Harris, Ryan Condal, and Vince Gerardis serving as executive producers. In the UK, the series will air on Sky Atlantic and stream on NOW.
House of the Dragon
The epic Targaryen saga continues its march toward all-out war. Based on Martin’s book Fire and Blood, the series charts the collapse of House Targaryen two centuries before the events of Game of Thrones. Returning cast includes Matt Smith (Doctor Who), Emma D’Arcy (Truth Seekers), Olivia Cooke (Bates Motel), Steve Toussaint (Pine Gap), Rhys Ifans (Notting Hill), Fabien Frankel (The Serpent), Ewan Mitchell (The Last Kingdom), Tom Glynn-Carney (Dunkirk), Sonoya Mizuno (Ex Machina), Harry Collett (Dunkirk), Bethany Antonia (Get Even), Phoebe Campbell (Midsomer Murders), Phia Saban (The Last Kingdom), Jefferson Hall (Vikings), Matthew Needham (The Serpent Queen), James Norton (Happy Valley), Tom Bennett (David Brent: Life on the Road), Kieran Bew (Beowulf), Kurt Egyiawan (The Exorcist), Freddie Fox (White House Farm), Clinton Liberty (Normal People), Gayle Rankin (GLOW), and Abubakar Salim (Raised by Wolves).
Ryan Condal returns as co-creator and showrunner. In the UK, House of the Dragon continues to air on Sky and stream on NOW.
The realm remains very busy indeed, and fans will have plenty to look forward to across both shows as the story of Westeros keeps unfolding.
