Apple TV Unveils First Look at Horror-Comedy ‘Widow’s Bay’, Starring Matthew Rhys, Coming April 2026

by Dave Elliott

Apple TV has dropped a first look at Widow’s Bay, a new genre-blending series coming to the streamer in April 2026, and it sounds like the sort of quietly odd, deeply unsettling coastal tale Apple has been getting very good at lately.

Set on a remote island town 40 miles off the New England coast, ‘Widow’s Bay’ follows Mayor Tom Loftis, played by Matthew Rhys (The Americans), a man desperately trying to drag his struggling community into the modern world. The problem is, the island has no Wi-Fi, barely any phone signal, and a population that firmly believes the place is cursed. Worse, they might be right.

Loftis wants respect. He does not get it. Seen as soft and cowardly by the locals, he is nonetheless determined to build a better future for his teenage son by turning the island into a tourist hotspot. Against all odds, he succeeds. Tourists arrive. Money starts flowing. And then the old stories that everyone laughed off for decades begin coming true.

Apple describes the series as blending genuine horror with character-driven comedy, which suggests something sitting in that deliciously uncomfortable space between laughs and dread. Think eerie folklore, social awkwardness, and the creeping sense that you absolutely should not have moved here.

Alongside Rhys, the ensemble cast includes Kate O’Flynn (Landscapers), Stephen Root (Barry), Kingston Rumi Southwick, Kevin Carroll (Snowfall), and Dale Dickey (Breaking Bad).

Behind the scenes, the show comes from creator and showrunner Katie Dippold, with Hiro Murai (Atlanta) directing five episodes and executive producing via his Chum Films banner. Additional directors this season include Ti West, Sam Donovan, and Andrew DeYoung, which is a line-up that should immediately put genre fans on alert.

Apple TV has released a short first-look video alongside the announcement, giving an early taste of the island’s unsettling atmosphere and hinting that the locals’ superstitions may be the least of anyone’s worries.

Widow’s Bay’ Season 1 premieres Wednesday, 29th April 2026 on Apple TV.
