Geektown Radio: Episode 483: Ghost of Yotei, Rematch, Pluribus, Percy Jackson Season 2, Fallout Returns & The Game Awards

by Dave Elliott

This week on Geektown Radio, Dave is joined by Matt from Entertainment Talk for a packed episode that blends hands-on gaming impressions, thoughtful TV chat, and a deep dive into one of the biggest nights in the gaming calendar. From Matt getting stuck into Ghost of Yotei and Rematch, to both hosts discussing Pluribus, Percy Jackson and the Olympians Season 2, Fallout’s return, and a very busy Game Awards, there is a lot to unpack.

What We’ve Been Playing & Watching

Ghost of Yotei

Matt has been spending time with ‘Ghost of Yotei’, Sucker Punch’s follow-up to Ghost of Tsushima. Set around a century later, the game introduces a new protagonist, Atsu, and moves away from a direct continuation in favour of a fresh story in the same world.

Matt talks about being several hours in and feeling like he has barely scratched the surface. He praises the combat flow, the sense of exploration, and how the game builds on Tsushima’s foundations without feeling repetitive. The world design and moment-to-moment gameplay are already clicking for him, even as the wider narrative is still unfolding.

Dave has not played it yet, but notes the strong reception and the way it immediately landed as one of the most talked-about releases of the moment.

Rematch

Matt has also been playing ‘Rematch’, the new football game from Sloclap, the studio behind Sifu. Rather than competing head-on with the big simulation titles, Rematch goes for smaller-scale, arcade-style matches, usually three-a-side or five-a-side.

He describes it as sitting somewhere between Rocket League and FIFA Street, with an emphasis on positioning, teamwork and player skill. Matt enjoys the mechanics, particularly goalkeeping, but notes that matches can sometimes fall apart when players try to be the hero rather than working as a team. Even so, both hosts agree it is refreshing to see something genuinely different in a space that can feel very samey.

Pluribus

Both Dave and Matt are still very much on board with ‘Pluribus’, the new series from Vince Gilligan. They talk about how much they are enjoying its slow, deliberate pacing and philosophical bent, with Matt especially appreciating how the show allows scenes to breathe and ideas to unfold naturally.

Dave agrees that while it is undeniably slow, that is very much part of Gilligan’s style, and something that will work brilliantly for some viewers while frustrating others. For them, it remains one of the most interesting pieces of TV currently airing.

The Game Awards

A significant chunk of the episode is spent talking about The Game Awards, focusing squarely on the winners and announcements rather than the ceremony itself.

The standout story of the night is Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, which absolutely swept the awards. Dave and Matt run through its huge haul, including Game of the Year, Game Direction, Narrative, Art Direction, Best Debut Game, Best Indie, Best Independent Game and Best RPG, with Jennifer English also picking up an individual award. They discuss how rare it is to see one game dominate to that extent, and briefly compare its combat style to Baldur’s Gate 3, noting that it leans more towards classic turn-based party combat rather than BG3’s systems-heavy approach.

Dave also mentions disappointment that some big titles, including The Outer Worlds 2 and Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, walked away empty-handed, joking that a little vote-splitting might have spread the love.

There is also chat about the sports categories, with Rematch and EA Sports FC losing out to Mario Kart, and some raised eyebrows over FC’s presence in the accessibility category.

GTA inevitably comes up, with both agreeing that Grand Theft Auto VI was always going to be a lock for Most Anticipated Game. Matt notes how its expected November release is already warping the release schedules of other studios, who are clearly keen to stay well out of its way.

Dave is genuinely pleased to see No Man’s Sky win Best Ongoing Game, praising its long-term redemption arc, the sheer volume of free updates, and how Hello Games have continued to expand it without paid DLC.

On the announcement front, several reveals stand out. LEGO Batman gets a particularly enthusiastic reaction, described as looking far better than anyone expected and suspiciously close to being an Arkham game in LEGO form. There is also excitement around new footage and details for the upcoming James Bond game.

Larian’s new Divinity trailer sparks plenty of discussion, especially its unsettling, cult-like tone, while Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic draws attention thanks to Casey Hudson’s involvement and its clear nods toward the Knights of the Old Republic era. The pair also mention ongoing Star Wars projects including Star Wars Eclipse and a newly revealed racer that sounds like a modern reworking of classic arcade Star Wars games.

Matt notes some disappointment at what was missing, particularly the absence of Intergalactic, but overall both come away feeling the Game Awards delivered a lot to talk about.

Dave’s Weekly Catch-Up

Dave updates listeners on a busy week behind the scenes at Geektown.

Geekstorians continues to roll out, with Episode 2 now live and Episode 3, focusing on VHS and how it reshaped viewing habits, landing next. He reminds listeners that Geekstorians has its own dedicated feed with ad-free episodes.

The rebranded Geektown Talks To… interview podcast has also launched, starting with an interview with composer Greg Nicolett, and now lives on its own feed alongside bonus drops on the main Geektown Radio feed.

The Geektown Awards are currently live, with voting proving very close in several categories, particularly in gaming.

On the TV front, Dave has been watching ‘Percy Jackson and the Olympians’ Season 2 on Disney+, enjoying its return to Camp Half-Blood and the new Golden Fleece storyline. He also flags that Sky is phasing out Sky Q, pushing customers toward Sky Stream and Sky Glass, signalling a clear move away from satellite television.
