Geektown Awards – Best New & Returning Animated Series 2025

by Dave Elliott

For the Geektown Awards 2025, animation proved to be strong enough to warrant a little extra attention.

Last year, all animated shows competed in a single category. This time around, however, there were more than enough series (and enough clear support for both new arrivals and long-running favourites) to split things out into Best New Animated Series and Best Returning Animated Series.

From superhero spin-offs and video-game adaptations to long-lived comedy classics, here’s how you voted.

Best New Animated Series

Nominees:
Creature Commandos, Season 1 – Sky Max
Devil May Cry, Season 1 – Netflix
Dream Productions, Limited Series – Disney+
Eyes of Wakanda, Season 1 – Disney+
Marvel Zombies, Season 1 – Disney+
Splinter Cell: Deathwatch – Netflix
The Mighty Nein, Season 1 – Prime Video
Win or Lose, Limited Series – Disney+
Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, Season 1 – Disney+

Bronze: Creature Commandos, Season 1 – Sky Max
Silver: Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, Season 1 – Disney+

Gold Winner: Marvel Zombies, Season 1 – Disney+

Following a strong showing in the superhero category, Marvel Zombies continued its impressive run by taking gold in Best New Animated Series.

The series clearly struck a chord with Geektown readers, blending familiar Marvel characters with a darker, animated twist that stood out in a crowded field. Disney+ also made a formidable showing overall, claiming both gold and silver thanks to Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, which landed comfortably in second place.

Meanwhile, Creature Commandos once again proved popular across multiple categories, while Splinter Cell: Deathwatch’s fourth-place finish highlighted the continued appeal of video-game adaptations making the jump to animation.

Best Returning Animated Series

Nominees:
Futurama, Season 13 – Disney+
Hazbin Hotel, Season 2 – Prime Video
Invincible, Season 3 – Prime Video
King of the Hill, Season 14 – Disney+
Rick and Morty, Season 8 – E4
Star Trek: Lower Decks, Season 5 – Paramount+
What If…?, Season 3 – Disney+

Bronze: Star Trek: Lower Decks, Season 5 (Final) – Paramount+
Silver: Rick and Morty, Season 8 – E4

Gold Winner: Futurama, Season 13 – Disney+

For the second year running, Futurama proved impossible to beat.

Now somehow into its thirteenth season — despite being cancelled and revived more times than anyone can sensibly keep track of — the animated sci-fi comedy once again topped the vote, finishing well ahead of its nearest rivals. The enduring popularity of Fry, Leela, Bender and the rest of the Planet Express crew shows no sign of fading.

Behind it, Rick and Morty and Star Trek: Lower Decks rounded out the podium, continuing a strong tradition of adult-leaning animated sci-fi dominating the returning series category.

Splitting animation into new and returning series this year has highlighted just how healthy the genre is right now, with brand-new shows finding an audience while long-running favourites continue to draw loyal support.

More Geektown Awards 2025 results are coming very soon, as we continue to reveal the TV shows, films and games that made the biggest impression on Geektown readers over the past year.
