Geektown Awards – Best New & Returning Sci-Fi/Fantasy Series 2025

by Dave Elliott

We now head firmly into the geekier end of the Geektown Awards, with Best New and Best Returning Sci-Fi/Fantasy Series.

Last year, there were so many shows that we split science fiction and fantasy into separate categories. For 2025, however, the two genres are back together again, and once more the results highlight just how dominant this space has become across both streaming and broadcast television.

From galaxy-spanning adventures and dystopian futures, to time travel, monsters and myth-making, here is how you voted.

Best New Sci-Fi/Fantasy Series

Nominees:
Alien: Earth, Season 1 – Disney+
IT: Welcome to Derry, Season 1 – Sky Atlantic
Murderbot, Season 1 – Apple TV
Outlander: Blood Of My Blood, Season 1 – MGM+
Pluribus, Season 1 – Apple TV
Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, Season 1 – Disney+
The Institute, Season 1 – MGM+

Bronze: Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, Season 1 – Disney+
Silver: IT: Welcome to Derry, Season 1 – Sky Atlantic

Gold Winner: Alien: Earth, Season 1 – Disney+

Taking nearly a quarter of the vote, Alien: Earth emerged as the clear favourite in a fiercely competitive Best New Sci-Fi/Fantasy category.

The series marked a major moment for the Alien franchise, successfully bringing its iconic universe to television while retaining the tension, atmosphere and horror that made it so enduring in the first place. The strong showing from IT: Welcome to Derry and Star Wars: Skeleton Crew further underlines just how much appetite there is for well-executed genre storytelling right now.

Best Returning Sci-Fi/Fantasy Series

Nominees:
Andor, Season 2 – Disney+
Black Mirror, Season 7 – Netflix
Doctor Who, Season 2 – BBC iPlayer
Foundation, Season 3 – Apple TV
Invasion, Season 3 – Apple TV
Severance, Season 2 – Apple TV
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Season 3 – Paramount+
Stranger Things, Season 5 – Netflix
The Last of Us, Season 2 – Sky Atlantic
Yellowjackets, Season 3 – Paramount+

Bronze: Black Mirror, Season 7 – Netflix
Silver: Doctor Who, Season 2 – BBC iPlayer

Gold Winner: Stranger Things, Season 5 – Netflix

With almost 30% of the vote, Stranger Things stormed to victory in the Best Returning Sci-Fi/Fantasy category.

As the show heads toward its conclusion, the fifth season clearly resonated with viewers, comfortably finishing ahead of both Doctor Who and Black Mirror. Few series have managed to define an era of television in quite the same way, and its continued dominance in this category shows just how deeply embedded it remains in popular culture.

Behind it, Doctor Who continues its resurgence under Russell T Davies, while Black Mirror once again proves its ability to spark conversation, even many seasons in.

Bringing science fiction and fantasy back together this year has resulted in one of the strongest combined categories in the Geektown Awards, showcasing everything from long-running genre giants to ambitious new entries finding their audience.

More Geektown Awards 2025 results are coming very soon, as we continue to count down the TV shows, films and games that made the biggest impact on Geektown readers this year.
