The BBC has released the first trailer and new artwork for its upcoming television adaptation of Lord of the Flies, marking the first time the classic novel has been adapted for the small screen. The four-part drama will arrive on BBC iPlayer this February, before airing weekly on BBC One.
The series has been adapted and directed for television by multi-BAFTA winner Jack Thorne, working alongside director Marc Munden. Produced by Eleven for the BBC, the drama is a co-production with Australian broadcaster Stan, with Sony Pictures Television handling international distribution.
The adaptation features an ensemble cast of more than 30 boys, many making their professional acting debuts. Leading the group are Winston Sawyers as Ralph, Lox Pratt as Jack, David McKenna as Piggy, and Ike Talbut as Simon, alongside a wider cast portraying the other stranded schoolboys.
Faithful to William Golding’s original novel, the series follows a group of schoolboys marooned on a remote island after a plane crash. As they attempt to govern themselves without adult supervision, early efforts at order and cooperation begin to fracture, giving way to power struggles, fear, and violence. While remaining set in the early 1950s on an unnamed Pacific island, Thorne’s version digs deeper into the book’s themes of human nature, the loss of innocence, and boyhood masculinity.
Each of the four episodes is titled after one of the story’s central characters – Ralph, Piggy, Simon, and Jack – offering shifting perspectives on the same events and how each boy responds to their unravelling society. The production was made with the support of William Golding’s family.
Music for the series comes from an impressive creative lineup, with Cristobal Tapia de Veer composing the score, while Hans Zimmer and Kara Talve of Bleeding Fingers Music have created the main theme and additional music.
‘Lord of the Flies’, first published in 1954, has remained a cornerstone of the English literature curriculum for decades. Golding went on to win the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1983, cementing the novel’s status as one of the most influential works of the 20th century.
