Netflix has renewed ‘A Man on the Inside’ for a third season, bringing Ted Danson (The Good Place) back as late-in-life detective Charles Nieuwendyk. The Mike Schur comedy-mystery, inspired by the Oscar-nominated documentary The Mole Agent, will continue its blend of sleuthing, warmth and sharp humour, with the new season now officially in the works.
Danson shared his enthusiasm for the renewal in a statement, saying:
“I’m so excited to see where Charles Nieuwendyk goes next. I’ve been blessed to work with Mike Schur for most of the last decade, and I’m still amazed by what he does. I’m incredibly thankful to him for creating this character and trusting me with him. The cast and crew make it very hard to call this ‘work.’ Huge thanks to Netflix for believing in the show, and letting us keep this ride going.”
Created by Mike Schur, ‘A Man on the Inside’ first premiered in November 2024, introducing viewers to Charles, a recent widower persuaded by his daughter Emily, played by Mary Elizabeth Ellis (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia), to take up a more adventurous hobby. That decision lands him undercover in a retirement community, investigating a jewellery theft and unexpectedly rediscovering a sense of purpose and connection.
Season 2 raised the stakes by sending Charles into academia, posing as an engineering professor to uncover who was sabotaging a major donation linked to billionaire Brad Vinick, played by Gary Cole (NCIS). The season also introduced a romantic curveball in the form of Mona, portrayed by Mary Steenburgen (Back to the Future Part III), testing whether Charles was ready to open his heart again.
Reflecting on the show’s evolution, Schur previously explained how each season builds on what came before, noting that the foundations laid in Seasons 1 and 2 will shape the direction of Season 3. That steady growth has paid off. Across its first two seasons, ‘A Man on the Inside’ amassed over 45 million views by the end of 2025, spent five weeks in Netflix’s Global Top 10, and earned Danson nominations from the Golden Globes, Critics Choice Awards and SAG.
Season 2 also expanded the ensemble, welcoming Max Greenfield (New Girl), Jason Mantzoukas (Brooklyn Nine-Nine), Stephanie Beatriz (Brooklyn Nine-Nine), Stephen McKinley Henderson (Dune), David Strathairn (Good Night, and Good Luck), Jill Talley (SpongeBob SquarePants), and more, alongside returning favourites.
Season 3 details are being kept under wraps for now, but with Charles Nieuwendyk back on the case, Netflix viewers can expect another smart, heartfelt mystery filled with eccentric suspects and thoughtful storytelling.
‘A Man on the Inside’ does not yet have a premiere date for Season 3, but will air on Netflix in the UK. If you want to keep track of this or any other shows, you can add them via our Never Miss system, and you’ll be notified when it gets a UK premiere date. Visit Never Miss.
