Going Behind The Invisible VFX Of Netflix’s ‘The Residence’ With Crafty Apes

When a show is packed with visual effects, but you never notice them, that’s usually a sign that something has gone very, very right.

I recently had the pleasure of hosting a virtual panel for Impact24 PR, diving into the VFX work on Netflix’s ‘The Residence’ with two of the key creatives behind the scenes at Crafty Apes: John Nelson, VFX Supervisor, and Brandon Nelson, Creative Director. No relation, despite the shared surname.

Their work on the series has been recognised by the Visual Effects Society with nominations including Outstanding Supporting Visual Effects in a Photoreal Episode, Outstanding Environment in an Episodic project, and Outstanding Composition & Lighting. Which makes sense once you realise just how much of the show was carefully constructed, stitched together, and rendered in CG… without ever pulling you out of the story.

Invisible VFX And Why That Was The Point

From the outset, the goal was simple in theory and brutally complex in practice: the visual effects had to be invisible.

‘The Residence’ unfolds as a tightly constructed mystery, full of clues buried in dialogue, blocking and set detail. As John explained during the panel, anything that distracted the audience from those story beats would have broken the spell. The White House is not just a backdrop in this series, it is an iconic, globally recognised building. If it felt even slightly off, viewers would notice immediately.

That meant painstaking research into floor plans, historical detail and even landscaping. The team worked closely with production designer François Audouy to ensure everything from the rooms to the species of trees on the lawn felt authentic. The White House had to look right in daylight, at night, and from angles audiences had never seen before.

And in many cases, that White House was entirely CG.

The Dollhouse Shot That Shouldn’t Work But Does

One of the most talked-about sequences in the show is the “dollhouse” shot. The camera begins outside on the North Lawn, moves through the White House, witnesses a key moment in the story, and exits out the other side.

It feels like one elegant, continuous move.

In reality, it was anything but simple.

Because the White House set was split across multiple soundstages, the sequence was captured in separate pieces and then stitched together in post. Entire rooms were recreated in CG. Digital doubles filled out scenes. Lighting had to transition seamlessly from one physical environment to another. Lens changes had to be disguised so the audience never felt the shift from an intimate interior perspective to a sweeping exterior view.

At any given moment in the dollhouse view, you are looking at up to 20 fully realised CG rooms on screen at once. Crafty Apes built a modular digital White House that could be sliced open to reveal interiors, complete with accurate lighting temperatures for different areas. The fluorescent cool tones of the kitchen contrast with the warmer incandescent lighting of dining rooms, helping your brain instantly recognise each space as authentic.

And then there are the details you probably missed.

Around 160 digital doubles populate that sequence. There are subtle story clues hidden in rooms. A dog lies quietly in the background of one scene, a small but deliberate narrative hint that only becomes meaningful later. These are the kinds of Easter eggs that reward obsessive rewatching, but never distract from the first viewing.

That balance between precision and restraint is the real trick.

Building A Photoreal Falcon From Scratch

If the White House was the architectural challenge, the falcon was the biological one.

Episode two opens with an extreme close-up of a falcon’s eye, reflecting the White House in its surface before the camera pulls back to reveal the bird itself. That shot required micro-level detail in the cornea, the surface texture of the eye, and the way light refracts across it.

Crafty Apes did have a real falcon on set for reference, but shallow depth of field and the unpredictability of a living bird meant they had to digitally recreate it almost entirely. The team developed a new internal workflow to handle feather systems capable of subtle ripples and wind interaction. A static bird would immediately feel fake, so even when gliding, the feathers had to move and respond to air flow.

On top of that, a falconer reviewed the work to ensure anatomical and behavioural accuracy. It is rare to have that level of specialist scrutiny on a CG creature, but in this case it pushed the team to an even higher standard.

The result is a bird that feels utterly real, even when it is flying through entirely digital environments.

Collaboration Is The Real Special Effect

What came through strongly in the discussion is how collaborative the process was. Previsualisation began before sets were even fully built. Camera paths were mapped out with the directors and director of photography. Decisions about stage layout were influenced by how shots would eventually be stitched together in post.

Visual effects were not a last-minute add-on. They were baked into the storytelling from day one.

As John and Brandon both highlighted, none of this happens without a huge team. Artists across Los Angeles, Vancouver and Atlanta contributed animation, lighting, compositing and rendering work to bring the vision together. What looks effortless on screen is the result of months of coordination, iteration and problem-solving.

And that is perhaps the most fascinating takeaway from the panel. On a show like ‘The Residence’, the best visual effects are the ones you never consciously register. They do not shout. They do not explode. They simply support the narrative, reinforce geography, and allow the audience to stay immersed in the mystery.
