Benicio Del Toro (Traffic, One Battle After Another) is reuniting with Ben Stiller (Escape at Dannemora) for Apple comedy series ‘Protective Custody’, marking Del Toro’s first leading role in a television comedy.
The series follows a disgraced financier accused of massive fraud who is placed into protective custody while awaiting trial. Trapped inside, he must negotiate prison politics, attempt to repair his ruined reputation and face the consequences of the actions that put him there.
Del Toro recently starred as Sergio St. Carlos in One Battle After Another, playing a karate sensei and leader within the undocumented community of Baktan Cross. The performance earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
‘Protective Custody’ reunites Del Toro and Stiller more than a decade after they worked together on Showtime limited series ‘Escape at Dannemora’. Del Toro starred as convicted murderer Richard Matt, one of two inmates who escaped from Clinton Correctional Facility, while Stiller directed and executive produced the drama.
This time, Stiller will also be appearing in front of the camera, taking on his first leading television comedy role while serving as an executive producer.
The series comes from Mike Judge (King of the Hill), Steve Hely (Veep) and Dave King (Parks and Recreation), who will co-write, co-showrun and executive produce. Judge will also direct.
Apple Studios produces alongside Red Hour, Propagate Content and 3 Arts Entertainment. Stiller, John Lesher, Ben Silverman, Howard Owens, Rodney Ferrell, Michael Rotenberg, Oly Obst and Nanette Burstein also executive produce.
Apple has not yet announced a premiere date for ‘Protective Custody’.
