‘Ludwig‘ will return to BBC One and BBC iPlayer this August, with the BBC adding a particularly welcome bonus for anyone who prefers solving their murder mysteries in one long sitting.
All six episodes of the second series will land as a box set on BBC iPlayer alongside the BBC One premiere, meaning viewers can either follow weekly or immediately disappear into another stack of suspicious deaths, impossible puzzles and socially awkward police work.
David Mitchell (Peep Show) returns as John ‘Ludwig’ Taylor, the reclusive puzzle-setter who spent the first series impersonating his missing identical twin brother, Detective Chief Inspector James Taylor.
His unusual approach to police work proved rather effective, even if almost everything else about being around other human beings remained something of a challenge.
Series 2 finds John no longer pretending to be James. Instead, he is officially working as a Crime Scene Consultant for the Cambridge Police Authority and teaming up with DCI Russell Carter to investigate a new collection of seemingly “impossible” crimes.
That should make him “more Ludwig than ever”, according to the BBC, although the larger mystery surrounding the disappearance of his brother remains unresolved.
Returning alongside him are Anna Maxwell Martin (Motherland) as Lucy Betts-Taylor, Dipo Ola (Landscapers) as Russell Carter, Dorothy Atkinson (Call the Midwife) as DCS Carol Shaw, Ralph Ineson (The Witch) as Chief Constable Ziegler and Karl Pilkington (Sick of It) as DI Matt Neville.
The second series will also introduce Mark Bonnar (Guilt, Line of Duty) as newspaper editor Gareth Fisher and Sian Clifford (Fleabag) as local MP Joanne Kemper.
Ben Ashenden (Stath Lets Flats) and Rumi Sutton (The Last Bus) also return as DS Ethan Cole and DC Caitlin Sullivan.
The BBC will naturally be hoping ‘Ludwig’ can repeat the success of its first outing. The opening series became one of the broadcaster’s biggest scripted launches of 2024, pulling in more than 9.5 million viewers and turning the reluctant detective into a sizeable hit.
Dropping the complete run on iPlayer should make the new series even more tempting, particularly for viewers who know full well that “just one more puzzle” is how entire evenings mysteriously disappear.
‘Ludwig‘ Season 2 premieres Thursday, 20th August 2026 at 9pm on BBC One, with all six episodes available as a box set on BBC iPlayer from the same date.
