‘Professor T’ Series 4 Finally Sets August UK Premiere On ITV1 & ITVX

by Dave Elliott

It has taken a little longer than anyone expected, but Professor T Series 4 finally has a UK premiere date, with the Cambridge-set crime drama returning to ITV1 and ITVX this August.

The new episodes arrive more than two years after the third series concluded on ITV, although American viewers have already seen them after the season aired on PBS in the US last year. It is another of those slightly odd transatlantic scheduling situations where a British drama somehow reaches the other side of the Atlantic before making it onto UK television.

Ben Miller (Bridgerton, Death in Paradise) returns as criminology professor Jasper Tempest, with the new season picking up after the devastating events of the Series 3 finale.

That cliffhanger saw DS Lisa Donckers struck during a hit-and-run, leaving both Jasper and Dan struggling with their grief. Dan attempts to bury himself in his police work, while Jasper retreats into the relative safety of his university lectures and tries to avoid assisting the police altogether.

However, therapist Helena Goldberg eventually helps Jasper face up to his loss and return to the world of criminal investigations. The team will tackle another collection of complex and dangerous cases, although PBS has teased that, among all the murder and mystery, “love is very much in the air.”

The fourth series also marks something of a new chapter for ‘Professor T’. The UK adaptation was originally based on the Belgian drama of the same name, but has now continued beyond the original show’s three-season run.

Writer Stephen Brady teased the creative freedom that has come with moving into completely original stories, saying: “We’ve taken the stabilisers off!”

Brady also credited Miller’s contribution to developing the character and shaping the new episodes.

“Like most actors, Ben knows the character a bit better than me,” he explained, adding that the storylines were developed collaboratively between Miller, himself and executive producer Walter Iuzzolino.

There is also plenty more ‘Professor T’ on the way. Production on Series 5 has already been completed, while ITV has also commissioned the drama for a sixth outing.

The fifth series will introduce Zoë Wanamaker (Shadow and Bone, My Family) as Zelda Radclyffe, the sister of Adelaide Tempest and Jasper’s aunt. Frances de la Tour (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, The History Boys) returns as Adelaide, alongside Juliet Stevenson (Emma, Truly Madly Deeply) as Helena Goldberg.

Barney White (Against the Law), Sunetra Sarker (Playing Nice, Casualty) and Rhian Blundell (Vampire Academy, Nobody Girl) will also return as Dan Winters, Maiya Goswami and Chloe Highsmith.

ITV has teased that the future investigations will include a boxing match that takes a bloody turn and a string of unexplained deaths at an upmarket spa. However, before those cases arrive, UK viewers finally have the small matter of Series 4 to solve.

Professor T’ Series 4 premieres Wednesday, 19th August 2026 at 9pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
