Well, this is a bit of a surprise. Sky has announced a second chapter of acclaimed crime drama ‘Under Salt Marsh‘, despite the show originally being billed as a limited series, with Rafe Spall (Trying, The English) returning as Detective Eric Bull.
Rather than simply continuing the same story, the currently untitled six-part sequel will relocate Bull to an entirely new corner of the UK. Following the events of the first series, the detective heads to a remote Scottish mining village which is, according to Sky, “sinking under the weight of its own secrets”. When a murder investigation begins, the case also brings Bull closer to discovering the truth about his own past.
It sounds like Sky and creator Claire Oakley are effectively evolving ‘Under Salt Marsh’ into something closer to an anthology built around Bull, with a new location, new mystery and presumably a largely new supporting cast each time.
The move perhaps isn’t quite as surprising when you look at how well the first series performed. ‘Under Salt Marsh’ launched in January 2026 and became Sky’s biggest Original drama launch since ‘The Day of the Jackal’. It also became the broadcaster’s biggest entertainment title of 2026 to date, pulling in a 28-day audience of 2.5 million.

Rafe Spall brought Eric Bull’s idiosyncrasies to life so brilliantly in the first series that taking his character onwards is an absolute pleasure. And I’m delighted to be continuing the partnership with Little Door and Sky,” commented creator and executive producer Claire Oakley.
The original drama saw Rafe Spall play Detective Eric Bull opposite Kelly Reilly (Yellowstone) as Jackie Ellis, a former detective turned teacher living in the fictional Welsh town of Morfa Halen. After one of Jackie’s young pupils was found dead, Bull arrived to investigate, with the murder reopening old wounds surrounding the disappearance of Jackie’s niece three years earlier.
With the second chapter moving from the Welsh coast to a Scottish mining village, it appears Bull will be the connective tissue between stories rather than ‘Under Salt Marsh’ remaining tied to Morfa Halen. That gives Sky plenty of room to keep the atmospheric crime drama going without having to manufacture another disaster for exactly the same unfortunate group of locals.
The second chapter is again produced by Little Door Productions in association with Sky Studios. Claire Oakley returns as creator, writer and director, writing alongside In-Sook Chappell, Jonathan Harbottle and Scott Graham. Zoranna Piggott serves as series producer, with Elwen Rowlands and Oakley executive producing for Little Door Productions, alongside Megan Spanjian for Sky.
Filming on the second chapter of ‘Under Salt Marsh‘ is due to begin in Scotland in 2027. The series will air on Sky and streaming service NOW in the UK and Ireland, although no premiere date has been announced yet.
