Disney and Pixar have set a September streaming date for ‘Toy Story 5’, bringing Woody, Buzz, Jessie and the rest of the gang home to Disney+ following the film’s huge theatrical run.
The fifth movie in the beloved Pixar franchise sees the toys facing a distinctly modern problem: technology. This time around, Bonnie receives Lilypad, a brand-new tablet device with some rather disruptive ideas about what is best for her, leaving the old-school toys wondering whether playtime as they know it is about to change forever.
Since arriving in cinemas in June, ‘Toy Story 5’ has grossed more than $1.1 billion worldwide, with Disney also noting that the movie is both Certified Fresh and Verified Hot on Rotten Tomatoes, alongside receiving an A CinemaScore. Deadline’s Damon Wise described the film as “a fun, thoughtful, multi-generational family film.”
The movie also arrives on Disney+ with a musical bonus. The piano version of Taylor Swift’s original song “I Knew It, I Knew You” is now available as a standalone release. The song is performed by Swift and was written and produced by Swift and Jack Antonoff.
Disney says the wider ‘Toy Story’ franchise remains the most-watched film franchise on Disney+, with more than 2 billion hours streamed globally. The new film will join the existing collection on the service, giving fans the option of turning the whole thing into a rather substantial Pixar marathon.
There is also more music on the way for collectors. The ‘Toy Story 5’ Original Soundtrack is available to pre-order on vinyl and CD, featuring “I Knew It, I Knew You” alongside an original score from Randy Newman, who returns to score his fifth ‘Toy Story’ movie.
The film is directed by Andrew Stanton, co-directed by Kenna Harris, produced by Lindsey Collins and Jessica Choi, and written by Stanton and Harris from a story by Stanton.
