Prime Video is heading into the darker corners of North London, greenlighting ‘Crouch End’, a new six-part UK Original limited series based on Stephen King’s short story.
The supernatural crime thriller comes from writer Paul Tomalin (Bodies) and director Tom Shankland (Berlin Noir, The Serpent), with Prime Video billing the project as the first Stephen King adaptation to be produced in the UK.
‘Crouch End’ takes King away from the rather more familiar horrors of places such as Castle Rock and Derry and drops the action into North London, where things are apparently about to get considerably stranger than delayed buses and questionable property prices.
The story follows global movie star Doris Freeman, who bursts into a London police station claiming that strange phenomena are responsible for the disappearance of her husband. Police inspector Ted Vetter is left trying to work out whether Doris is telling the truth, whether she could actually be responsible for her husband’s disappearance, or whether something far more unsettling is lurking beneath the streets of Crouch End.
Prime Video describes the series as combining a “visceral crime thriller” with a supernatural mystery, with King’s distinctly Lovecraftian story providing the foundation.
“Stephen King is one of the defining storytellers of our time, and we’re thrilled to bring his Lovecraftian tale to life in London with Crouch End. Paul Tomalin brings a singular, character-driven vision to the series and, paired with Tom Shankland at the helm, plus the first-class production teams at Mammoth Screen and Fifth Season, this show will grip audiences worldwide with its visceral crime thriller and supernatural mystery,” said Nicole Clemens, VP of International Originals at Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios.
Tomalin added: “After reading Crouch End some years back, Stephen King’s vivid prose has haunted my nightmares ever since. Having the honour to adapt it with the incredible team at Mammoth, Fifth Season and Amazon alongside director Tom Shankland is a dream come true. I couldn’t be more excited to bring this thrilling tale to the screen.”
Director Tom Shankland is also something of a King fan, commenting: “I’ve been a Stephen King super-fan forever. The chance to work with this great team and bring his utterly brilliant London mystery to life is beyond exciting – Crouch End will be cinematic, original and thought-provoking in equal measure.”
The series is produced by Mammoth Screen (Hercule, The Serpent) and Fifth Season (East of Eden, Severance). Executive producers are Paul Tomalin, Tom Shankland, Damien Timmer, Rebecca Keane and Ben Irving.
No casting has been announced yet, so we don’t currently know who will be wandering into King’s particularly unpleasant version of North London. However, with a six-episode run, Tomalin adapting and Shankland directing, this certainly looks like another interesting addition to the seemingly endless supply of Stephen King stories finding their way onto our screens.
‘Crouch End’ premieres on Prime Video. A premiere date has not yet been announced.
