Prime Video has brought the curtain down on ‘Spider-Noir‘ after just one season, with the Nicolas Cage-led superhero drama not returning for a second outing. However, Amazon’s partnership with Sony isn’t going anywhere, with another Marvel-based series reportedly getting close to a greenlight.
The series, which saw Nicolas Cage make his first major television role as private investigator Ben Reilly, was part of a wider agreement between Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television to develop shows based on characters from Sony Pictures’ Universe of Marvel Characters.
‘Spider-Noir’ was actually the second series ordered under that agreement, although it became the first to reach screens after the previously announced ‘Silk: Spider Society’ was scrapped during development.
According to Deadline, Amazon had been expected to wait and see how ‘Spider-Noir’ performed before making decisions about additional projects. While Cage’s noir-flavoured superhero adventure won’t be continuing, development on multiple other shows is still active, with one project reportedly nearing a series order.
As with ‘Spider-Noir’, shows produced under the Amazon and Sony deal are expected to premiere first on MGM+ in the US before heading to Prime Video for streaming.
The cancellation is perhaps a little surprising given the response to the series. ‘Spider-Noir’ scored 92% from critics and 90% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes at the time of the report, while also picking up 11 Emmy nominations, the most for any Prime Video series in 2026.
It wasn’t exactly ignored by viewers either. The series launched at number two on Nielsen’s US streaming chart for original shows, with 851 million minutes watched during its first week. Across its first six weeks, it generated 2.6 billion viewing minutes in the US.
However, Deadline reports that the show fell out of Prime Video’s daily Top 10 relatively quickly, and its respectable rather than massive audience was paired with what was apparently a pretty hefty production bill. The series was filmed in both colour and black and white versions, adding another layer of complexity and expense to the production.
Given that streamers tend to look very closely at the relationship between viewing numbers and production costs when making renewal decisions, that appears to have worked against the series.
At least viewers won’t be left staring at a giant unresolved cliffhanger. Season one tells a largely complete story, although there are a handful of loose threads which now look unlikely to be picked up.
Based on the Marvel comic Spider-Man Noir, the live-action series follows Ben Reilly, a down-on-his-luck private investigator in 1930s New York who is forced to confront his past life following a deeply personal tragedy, along with his history as the city’s only superhero.
Alongside Nicolas Cage, the cast includes Lamorne Morris, Li Jun Li, Karen Rodriguez, Abraham Popoola, Jack Huston and Brendan Gleeson.
Oren Uziel and Steve Lightfoot served as co-showrunners and executive producers, developing the series alongside Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse team Phil Lord, Christopher Miller and Amy Pascal. Lord, Miller, Pascal, Cage, Pavlina Hatoupis, Aditya Sood and Dan Shear also executive produced, while Harry Bradbeer directed and executive produced the opening two episodes.
So, while ‘Spider-Noir’ has reached the end of the road after one season, it doesn’t appear to signal the end of Amazon and Sony’s attempt to bring more characters from Sony’s Marvel library to television. With another project apparently getting close to a series order, we may not have to wait too long to discover which corner of that universe they’re exploring next.
