Paramount+ UK is bringing back two familiar faces with badges this October, as ‘Sheriff Country‘ and ‘Boston Blue‘ both return for their second seasons on the same day.
That means another trip to Edgewater with Mickey Fox, alongside more Boston policing with Danny Reagan. If your viewing schedule has been looking a little short on criminal investigations, complicated families and people whose work follows them home, consider that particular gap filled.
Back To Edgewater
A spin-off from ‘Fire Country’, ‘Sheriff Country’ stars Morena Baccarin (‘Homeland’, ‘Gotham’) as Mickey Fox, the sheriff tasked with keeping the small Northern California town of Edgewater in order.
Mickey is the stepsister of Cal Fire division chief Sharon Leone, connecting the drama directly to the world of ‘Fire Country’. However, her job takes her into a different side of the community, investigating crimes and dealing with threats that require more than a fire hose.
Unfortunately for Mickey, the distinction between professional problems and personal ones is not always particularly helpful. Her father, Wes, is an ex-convict and an off-the-grid marijuana grower. Played by W. Earl Brown (‘Deadwood’), he gives her plenty to contend with alongside the demands of protecting the town. Family dinners must be an interesting exercise in choosing your topics carefully.
The ensemble also includes Matt Lauria (‘Friday Night Lights’) as Nathan Boone and Christopher Gorham (‘Ugly Betty’, ‘Covert Affairs’) as Travis Fraley.
For viewers who enjoy the community setting of ‘Fire Country’, the appeal here is seeing that world from another angle. Mickey has a badge and a duty to uphold the law, but knowing the people on both sides of an investigation can make that duty considerably more complicated.
Danny Reagan’s Boston Chapter Continues
Over in ‘Boston Blue’, Donnie Wahlberg (‘Band of Brothers’) reprises his ‘Blue Bloods’ role as Danny Reagan, continuing the detective’s story following his move from the NYPD to the Boston Police Department.
His partner is Lena Silver, played by Sonequa Martin-Green (‘Star Trek: Discovery’, ‘The Walking Dead’). She comes from a prominent family with its own deep roots in law enforcement, meaning Danny has found another household where discussing work over dinner is probably unavoidable.
Lena’s mother, Mae Silver, is Boston’s district attorney, played by Gloria Reuben (‘ER’), while her sister Sarah is a police superintendent, played by Maggie Lawson (‘Psych’). Ernie Hudson (‘Ghostbusters’) plays Reverend Edwin Peters, the family’s Baptist pastor patriarch.
The younger generation is part of the story too, with Danny’s son Sean and Lena’s brother Jonah forging their own paths as Boston police officers. That gives Danny the added challenge of balancing his instincts as a detective with his responsibilities as a father. Apparently, a change of city does not come with a complimentary reduction in family complications.
While the setting has changed, ‘Boston Blue’ retains the mix of police cases and family relationships that made ‘Blue Bloods’ such a long-running fixture. Season 2 continues that next chapter, with Danny’s place in Boston providing the connection between the Reagan and Silver families.
Two Spin-Offs Returning Together
Both dramas have already moved beyond their debut seasons, giving UK viewers another run of stories in two established television worlds. It is also a handy pairing: small-town policing in one, big-city investigations in the other, with family ties running through both.
Whether you followed the original shows or came to these spin-offs through their leading actors, their shared UK return means you can put both back on your October watchlist. Just leave a little room between all the other autumn television arrivals…
