Prime Video is keeping Frances Neagley in business, renewing ‘Neagley’ for a second season after the ‘Reacher’ spinoff attracted 40 million viewers in its first 13 days. Apparently, one former member of the Army’s 110th Special Investigations Unit keeping everyone busy simply wasn’t enough.
The renewal comes just two weeks after the streaming service released the entire first season, and follows the news earlier this week that ‘Reacher’’ has already been renewed for Season 6. That gives fans of Lee Child’s world another helping of both Jack Reacher and the woman who can usually be relied upon to keep up with him.
According to Amazon, ‘Neagley’ has become Prime Video’s fourth most-watched series debut. More than half of its audience came from outside the US, with the UK, Germany and Brazil singled out as particularly strong markets. So, if you spent a sizeable chunk of the last fortnight watching Frances work her way through a very suspicious death, you’ve had plenty of company.
Maria Sten (‘Swamp Thing’, ‘Channel Zero’) leads the series as Frances Neagley, the Chicago private investigator and former military protégé of Jack Reacher. Having established herself in the parent series, she steps into the spotlight here with a case that is rather more personal than your average day at the office.
The first season sees Neagley learn that a beloved friend from her past has been killed in a suspicious accident. Convinced there is more to his death, she becomes hell-bent on getting justice. Given her background in the 110th, that is probably the point at which anyone involved should start reconsidering their life choices.
While the series gives Frances her own investigation, it also retains a connection to the show that introduced her to television audiences. Alan Ritchson (‘Titans’) guest stars as Jack Reacher, bringing the familiar face back into Neagley’s orbit. The spinoff’s central focus, however, is the investigator herself, giving Sten the opportunity to lead a story built around her character.
For Prime Video, the viewing figures provide a strong start for that expansion. A second season means there is now room to follow Frances beyond her debut solo investigation, while the parent show’s early renewal keeps the wider franchise moving too. Details of Neagley’s next case have yet to be announced, so we’ll have to wait to find out what brings her back into action.
“Audiences around the world have embraced Frances Neagley as a force all her own,” said Peter Friedlander, Head of Global Television, Amazon MGM Studios. “Maria Sten delivers a commanding, layered performance that drives every episode, and Nick Santora and Nicholas Wootton have built a world that is both thrilling and compelling. We are excited to continue this story and explore what’s next for Neagley with our partners at Paramount Television Studios.”
‘Neagley’ is produced by Paramount Television Studios and Amazon MGM Studios. Nick Santora and Nicholas Wootton created the series and serve as co-showrunners, with Lee Child, Don Granger, Sam Hill, Adam Higgs and Lisa Kussner joining them as executive producers.
With the first season available in full, there’s already a complete investigation waiting for anyone who hasn’t caught up. For those who have, Frances is officially getting another round. We suspect the people on the wrong end of her next case will be considerably less pleased about that than the viewers.
‘Neagley’ Season 1 is available now on Prime Video. Season 2 has been confirmed, with a UK premiere date yet to be announced.
