Marcus works in retail while trying to establish himself as a photographer, while Effie is studying dance at university in Dublin. When they meet, the connection between them is immediate and undeniable, but Effie is already in a relationship with Marcus’ friend Samuel.
Marcus refuses to cross that boundary, although a shared project documenting Black creatives across London repeatedly draws Marcus and Effie back into one another’s lives. As their friendship develops into something deeper, the pair must decide whether their love can survive the obstacles standing between them.
Based on Caleb Azumah Nelson’s debut novel, Open Water is an intimate romantic drama exploring love, identity, belonging and the experience of being young and Black in modern Britain.
