Prime Video has finally confirmed when ‘The Devil’s Hour‘ will return, with the mind-bending psychological thriller starring Peter Capaldi (Doctor Who) and Jessica Raine (Call the Midwife) heading back to our screens this December for its third and final season.
It’s been just over two years since we last ventured into the wonderfully twisted world of Lucy Chambers and Gideon Shepherd, but the wait is nearly over. The concluding season will consist of five episodes, bringing creator Tom Moran’s ambitious, time-looping trilogy to its conclusion. And given everything that’s happened so far, we’re expecting a few more twists before the credits roll!
For those who need a reminder (and frankly, with this show, who doesn’t?), ‘The Devil’s Hour’ follows Lucy Chambers (Raine), a woman whose life becomes entangled with the mysterious Gideon Shepherd (Capaldi), a serial killer who appears to have an extraordinary understanding of time, fate, and the multiple lives people unknowingly live.
What initially appeared to be a supernatural mystery involving Lucy waking at precisely 3:33am gradually evolved into something considerably more complicated. Across its first two seasons, the series has explored alternate timelines, recurring lives, and the terrifying consequences of attempting to change events that seem destined to happen.
The second season, which premiered back in October 2024, expanded the mythology significantly, revealing more about Gideon’s attempts to prevent a series of devastating terrorist attacks and Lucy’s increasingly complicated role in his plans. It also left viewers with a rather significant cliffhanger, setting up what promises to be an explosive final chapter.
In Season 3, Lucy finds herself in yet another life, but this time she remembers what came before. She recalls being a police detective who failed to prevent the terrorist attacks, and she remembers Gideon, the man who warned her they were coming.
Now reborn into a life where she is neither a mother nor a police officer, Lucy remains haunted by memories of both. With nobody else to turn to, she forms an uneasy alliance with Gideon as they attempt to track down a monstrous child killer who has managed to evade her across multiple lifetimes.
Of course, trusting Gideon has never been particularly straightforward, especially when his methods tend to involve some rather extreme approaches to resetting the timeline. Whether Lucy and Gideon can finally break the cycle, or whether they’re simply destined to repeat their mistakes, remains to be seen.
Alongside Capaldi and Raine, Nikesh Patel (Starstruck) returns as DI Ravi Dhillon, with Phil Dunster (Ted Lasso), Meera Syal (Goodness Gracious Me) and Saffron Hocking (Top Boy) also reprising their roles.
Created and written by Tom Moran, the series is produced by Hartswood Films, with Steven Moffat and Sue Vertue among its executive producers. The third season was already filmed by the time the second arrived on Prime Video, so fans have had a particularly lengthy wait to discover how the story concludes.
One of the things that makes ‘The Devil’s Hour’ so compelling is how cleverly it plays with its central concept. What starts out looking like one kind of thriller frequently turns out to be something completely different, with apparently insignificant details suddenly becoming hugely important once the bigger picture emerges.
Moran always envisioned the story as a three-season arc, so unlike many shows which end before they’ve had the opportunity to complete their stories, this final run should provide the conclusion that was planned from the beginning.
Whether that means we’ll finally understand every last detail of Gideon’s endless cycles, Lucy’s unusual connection to him, and precisely what makes her son Isaac so extraordinary is another matter entirely. But after two seasons of beautifully constructed temporal chaos, we’re certainly looking forward to seeing how all the pieces fit together.
‘The Devil’s Hour‘ Season 3 premieres Friday, 4th December 2026 on Prime Video.
