David Boreanaz Takes Lead In Navy SEAL Pilot

Another day, and another Buffy alumnus has got a new gig! This time it’s Bones star David Boreanaz, who has joined the pilot of CBS’s new Navy SEAL drama.

The role originally went to Person Of Interest’s Jim Caviezel, but he has apparently exited the project due to ‘creative differences’ with the producers. That left the door open for Boreanaz to step into the role of Jason, leader of the SEAL team, who’s highly experienced, but has been left with both mental and physical scars from his years on the job.

Additional cast includes Max Thieriot (Bates Motel), A.J. Buckley (CSI:NY, Supernatural), Jessica Paré (Mad Men) Neil Brown Jr. (Suits, Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency), and Toni Trucks (Franklin & Bash, Grimm).

Boreanaz is, of course, best known for his role as Seeley Booth on long running crime drama Bones, and Angel in Joss Whedon’s Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Angel. Since the announcement that Bones would be ending this year, he’s been on Hollywood’s ‘hot list’ of actors that producers have been trying to lure onto their pilots. Whilst going from ex-Army Ranger/FBI agent to Navy SEAL might not seem like a huge leap, given the team behind the pilot, this should be a very different show to Bones.

The new as-yet-untitled Navy SEAL drama has been written by Benjamin Cavell (Justified, Sneaky Pete), and is being directed by Chris Chulack (Shameless, Longmire, Animal Kingdom). If you’re wondering about the visual style of the show, the lovely and talented Gonzalo Amat (Person of Interest, The Man in the High Castle) is cinematographer for the pilot, so it should be something very special.

Obviously there’s no guarantee this show will go to series, but I have high hopes for something interesting given the team behind it. If you’re missing your David Boreanaz fix, you can catch Bones final 3 episodes, Friday nights at 9pm on Sky Living.
