Disney Buys LucasFilm
Well this is some news that seemed to have popped up out of no where. The Walt Disney company have forked out a whopping $4 billion for LucasFilm! Well… I say whopping, but when your company is worth nearly $90 billion already, $4 billion doesn’t seem like so much I guess.H
It’s actually a pretty obvious fit too, and a sign the George was serious when he made noises about wanting to step back from the franchise. He’s quoted as saying “For the past 35 years, one of my greatest pleasures has been to see Star Wars passed from one generation to the next. I’ve always believed that Star Wars could live beyond me, and I thought it was important to set up the transition during my lifetime.”
And what will Disney do with this new found license… A 7th Star Wars film, that’s what! And are promising more films after that. As to what these films will entail, who can say… Will it continue the main story, and start filming the books? Or will they relate to the expanded universe in general? Or maybe bring the Old Republic to the big screen for the first time? It’s fair to say, there’s a lot out that to work with!
Edit: Just been back and checked the official press release… And it does actually say, EPISODE 7, followed by 8 and 9! And then more movies after that!
It’ll be interesting to see how much George manages to stay ‘hands off” and leave the story telling to a new generation (who can hopefully write decent dialogue.) ;)
