Well, thank goodness for that! If you’ve just finished Season 4 and found yourself staring at the credits wondering how on Earth they could leave things there, Netflix has delivered some very welcome news. ‘The Diplomat‘ has officially been renewed for Season 5, meaning we will actually get some answers after that ending!
Created by Debora Cahn (Homeland, The West Wing), the brilliant political drama stars Keri Russell (The Americans) as Kate Wyler, the US ambassador to the UK, whose professional and personal lives seem to be in a permanent state of crisis. Between navigating international diplomatic disasters, the increasingly complicated politics of the White House, and her rather unconventional marriage to Hal Wyler, played by Rufus Sewell (The Man in the High Castle), Kate rarely gets a moment to catch her breath. And frankly, neither do we!
Season 4, which arrived on Netflix earlier this month, managed to crank the tension up even further. With Allison Janney (The West Wing) as President Grace Penn and Bradley Whitford (The West Wing) as her husband Todd, the political manoeuvring reached extraordinary new heights, while Kate found herself trying to prevent a potentially catastrophic international confrontation.
All of which built towards a jaw-dropping finale at the G7 summit, leaving the political landscape looking very different and setting up some enormous questions for the future.
We’re deliberately not going into the specifics of that ending here, as plenty of people will still be catching up. However, suffice to say, Season 5 has an awful lot to untangle, and it would have been downright cruel to leave us without another season!
Speaking about the dramatic decisions made during the finale, creator Debora Cahn offered an intriguing observation about the themes behind the story.
“It is very important in terms of what we’re looking at, [to consider] what you can do as a group that you can’t do as an individual, or what will make a difference as a group that won’t make a difference as an individual,” said Cahn. “Moral contagion works in both directions.”
Beyond the political chaos, ‘The Diplomat’ has also become one of Netflix’s most successful prestige dramas. Across its four seasons, the series has accumulated more than 130 million views since debuting in 2023, spent 13 weeks in Netflix’s global Top 10, and reached the Top 10 in 87 countries.
The awards recognition has been equally impressive. The series has received Golden Globe, Emmy, Actor, PGA, WGA and Critics Choice nominations, among other honours. Russell won an Actor Award for her performance in Season 3, while Janney picked up an Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series.
The show’s impressive ensemble also includes Ato Essandoh (Chicago Med), Ali Ahn (Agatha All Along) and Nana Mensah (The Chair), who have helped make the increasingly tangled world of Washington and Westminster politics so compelling.
Netflix hasn’t yet revealed when Season 5 will begin production, how many episodes it will contain, or when we can expect it to arrive. However, given how Season 4 ended, it’s enormously reassuring to know the story will continue.
One of the things ‘The Diplomat’ does particularly well is balance genuinely high-stakes political drama with sharp dialogue, dark humour and gloriously messy relationships. Every time you think Kate might finally have a handle on the situation, someone makes another spectacularly questionable decision, and everything goes sideways again.
And after four seasons, we’re still absolutely hooked!
All four seasons of ‘The Diplomat‘ are available to stream on Netflix now. Season 5 has been officially confirmed, although a UK premiere date has not yet been announced.
