Merlin’s Katie McGrath Joins Supergirl

Katie McGrath has landed a role on Supergirl as Lex Luthor’s little sister it has been announced. The former Merlin and Dracula star will take on the recurring role of Lena Luthor, who has arrived in National City for a fresh start. Lex has recently been incarcerated for various evil doing, and Lena is now CEO of Luthor Corp. She plans to re-brand her brother’s evil empire as a force for good, and distance herself from his crimes. Kara is drawn into Lena’s sphere and must determine if she is friend or foe…

The casting of McGrath is the latest in a set of significant cast additions for Supergirl’s second season. Tyler Hoechlin was cast as Kara’s better know cousin, Superman, Floriana Lima joins as police officer Maggie Sawyer, Ian Gomez was cast as ‘sharp-witted newsman’ Snapper Carr, and original Wonder Woman Lynda Carter was cast as the President. It was also recently confirmed that Calista Flockhart had chosen to downgrade her role from ‘series regular’ to ‘recurring guest star’, after new network CW moved shooting to Vancouver for season 2, to be with the other DC/Berlantiverse shows.

This is not the first time the character of Lena Luthor has appeared on screen, as she also popped up in Smallville, played by Cassidy Freeman, and in the late 80’s Superboy tv show played by Jennifer Hawkins and Denise Gossett. Lena first appearing in the comics in 1961.

Supergirl returns to Sky 1 in the Autumn.
