New Clip From E4’s comedy horror Crazyhead

by Dave Elliott

A brand new comedy horror series from BAFTA-winning Misfit’s creator Howard Overman lands on E4 tomorrow night at 9pm, and to give you a taste of what you’re in for, we’ve been sent a little clip from the first episode of CRAZYHEAD.

The six-part series stars Cara Theobold (Downton Abbey) & Susan Wokoma (Chewing Gum) as Amy & Raquel, a rather unlikely duo of demon hunters. When people die most go quietly into the night. But some have unfinished business: scores to settle, blood to spill, axes to plant in people’s heads… These tormented souls work through their issues by possessing the living. Most of the time they walk freely amongst us, unseen by all but a special few.

Amy (Theobold) is one of those few. She works in a bowling alley and never really imagined herself battling the legions of hell. It can play havoc with a girl’s love life. Not to mention her mind. Thankfully Amy isn’t alone. Enter Raquel (Wokoma). Armed with Wikipedia and a baton she bought on e-bay, Raquel’s a self-made demon hunter with a whole lot of baggage and an impressive lack of social skills.

Overman says the idea for Crazyhead came to him whilst thinking about the phrase people use – ‘battling your demons’. “I had this idea that these girls were both battling their demons in friendship and love and all the sort of messed up stuff you have to deal with in life, as well as actual demons.”

An unlikely friendship is born as Amy and Raquel attempt to navigate their way through the choppy waters of their early twenties whilst simultaneously kicking the ass of some seriously gnarly demons.

“In the beginning Raquel is so thrilled that she’s found someone else who can see demons,” comments Wokoma. “Rather than feeling any competition she’s excited because it means she can hunt demons with her, or, you know go and hang out watch a film and do normal friend stuff. Amy understandably is reluctant and scared because she’s been down a different path, she’s had a hard time.”

“At the beginning Amy’s very wary because Raquel is larger than life, and Amy is going through this difficult time,” adds Theobold. “But then she also believes that there is something real about what she’s been seeing. She meets someone who tells her that they are real. Raquel confirms it in such an assured and matter-of-fact way that instantly Amy’s a bit defensive about the whole thing. But with the demons coming to get Amy, and then her best friend becoming involved, she has to quickly adapt and join Raquel in this crazy journey. Then once she’s on board their relationship develops more as Amy has to save Raquel. At the start she thinks Raquel’s mad, but knows that if Raquel’s mad then she’s mad too.”

Crazyhead starts on E4 on Wednesday 19th October, 9pm.
