‘Dredd’ and ‘Star Trek’ star Karl Urban will be starring in Amazon’s adaptation of the Garth Ennis (‘Preacher’) comic book series ‘The Boys‘ it has been announced.
Set in a world where costumed heroes soar through the sky and masked vigilantes prowl the night, sometimes you need someone to keep the superheroes in line when they become reckless… That’s where ‘The Boys’ come in. Billy Butcher, The Frenchman, Mother’s Milk (Laz Alonso – ‘The Mysteries of Laura’, ‘Deception’), The Female (Karen Fukuhara – ‘Suicide Squad’) and new recruit Wee Hughie (Jack Quaid – ‘The Hunger Games’, Vinyl’), whose girlfriend as “collateral damage” a superhero brawl, are not a fan of the ‘capes’. Backed by the CIA, they form a team designed to control and, if necessary, take out those superpowered beings who overstep the mark.
Urban will play Billy Butcher, leader of ‘The Boys’. Billy recruits Hughie to capitalise on his rage at the death of his girlfriend by the “hero” A-Train (Jessie T. Usher – ‘Independence Day: Resurgence’, ‘Survivor’s Remorse’).
The rest of the “superhero” team includes Antony Starr (‘Banshee’) as Homelander, Nathan Mitchell (‘iZombie’) as Black Noir, Dominique McElligott (‘House of Cards’) as Queen Maeve and Chace Crawford (‘Gossip Girl’) as The Deep.
The show is being written by Eric Kripke (‘Supernatural’, ‘Timeless’, ‘Revolution’) with Preacher’s Evan Goldberg and Seth Rogen directing the pilot. The trio will exec produce with Kripke serving as showrunner.
Hopefully, being attached to this new show won’t exclude him from reprising his role as Judge Dredd in the ‘Mega-City One’ series which is currently in development (assuming it makes it to screen.)
‘The Boys‘ is expected to land on Amazon Prime in 2019. We’ll let you know more as we hear it.
