Ricky Gervais’s new Netflix series After Life has been collecting up the cream of British talent as the streaming service announces a bunch of casting for the show today.

Tony (Gervais) had a perfect life. But after his wife Lisa suddenly dies, Tony changes. After contemplating taking his own life, he decides instead to live long enough to punish the world by saying and doing whatever he likes from now on. He thinks it’s like a Super Power – not caring about himself or anyone else – but it turns out to be tricky when everyone is trying to save the nice guy they used to know.

Joining Ricky on the new series are ‘Doctor Who’ & ‘Game Of Thrones’ star David Bradley, ‘Downton Abbey’ & ‘Doctor Who’ star Penelope Wilton, and Ashley Jensen, who was nominated for an Emmy for her work with Gervais on ‘Extras’, and also starred in ‘Ugly Betty’ and ‘Catastrophe’, and ‘Agatha Raisin’.

Also joining the cast are Tom Basden (‘Plebs’, ‘David Brent: Life On The Road’); Tony Way (‘Edge of Tomorrow’); David Earl (‘Cemetery Junction’, ‘Derek’); Joe Wilkinson (‘Him and Her’); Kerry Godliman (‘Derek’); Mandeep Dhillon, Jo Hartley, Roisin Conaty and Diane Morgan (David Brent: Life On The Road).

As Ricky commented in a statement, “this cast combines the best of the new breed of great British comedy talent with some of the wonderful alumni of my previous shows.”

As with most of Gervais’ stuff, the show will be created, executive produced, directed by and stars himself. He’ll be joined by Charlie Hanson, who worked with Gervais on ‘Extras’ and ‘Derek’, as exec producer. The series will be 6x30m episodes.

This will be the latest in a continuing collaboration between Gervais and the streaming behemoth. He recently launched his latest stand up ‘Humanity’ on the service, and previously worked with them on the movie ‘Special Correspondents’ in 2016. Netflix UK also carries ‘Derek’, ‘Extras’, ‘The Office’, and the spin-off movie ‘David Brent: Life on the Road’.

After Life‘ has only recently started pre-production so there’s no official air date yet, but we wouldn’t expect to see it before 2019.
