First Trailer For Joaquin Phoenix’s ‘Joker’ Arrives

by Dave Elliott

Warner Bros. has released the first trailer for their interesting Batman-adjacent movie project ‘Joker’, which sees Joaquin Phoenix don the clown make up for the first time.

Phoenix plays Arthur Fleck, a failed stand-up comedian disregarded by society who is driven insane and becomes a psychotic criminal mastermind. Rather than being a traditional “comic book” movie, it’s styled much more as a low-budget character study of one man’s descent into madness.

The movie seems to take a few elements from Alan Moore and Brian Bolland’s seminal ‘The Killing Joke’ graphic novel, but also is very much a love letter to the classic 70’s movies of exec producer Martin Scorsese, such as ‘Taxi Driver’ and ‘Raging Bull’. This new film is very much a standalone movie, separate from the rest of the (already rather confused) DC Cinematic Universe. In essence, it is much like a “one-shot” DC comic book, outside of whatever DC are doing in the main comic book timeline.

‘Joker’ is directed by Todd Phillips, and written by Phillips with Scott Silver. The film is released in the UK on Thursday, 3rd October 2019.
