Amazon Prime has picked up the UK broadcast rights to the upcoming teen-led ‘The Walking Dead’ spin-off the streaming service has announced.

The new series will feature two young female protagonists and focus on the first generation to come-of-age in the apocalypse as we know it. Some will become heroes. Some will become villains. In the end, all of them will be changed forever. Grown-up and cemented in their identities, both good and bad.

“TV audiences around the world have demonstrated their passion for The Walking Dead universe, and we are so excited to bring this next iteration to our Prime members,” commented Brad Beale, Vice President of Worldwide Licensing for Amazon Prime Video. “An exciting and heartfelt survival story that will have our viewers sitting on the edge of their seats, this next series from the world of The Walking Dead will make an excellent addition to the growing catalogue of global event series available to Amazon customers.”

Whilst these young adults have only known a world with “empties” (their word for walkers), they grew up protected behind walls in (relative) comfort and safety. As you can see in the trailer, their settlement seems to have managed to get back to something resembling pre-apocalypse civilisation. But, of course, they are not going to stay there… As you can see in the trailer, we see a small group of teens leave their compound and head out into the surrounding wasteland on a mission beyond their walls. It isn’t clear exactly where they are heading in the trailer, although it seems to have something to do with one teen’s father going missing.

The series will also help explain a little more about the people behind that mysterious helicopter that picked up Rick Grimes. In the panel at NYCC over the weekend, ‘The Walking Dead’ CCO Scott Gimple commented that the new show ties into the “three circles” symbol which we last saw on the side of the chopper which took away Mr Grimes… “Those three circles, and I’m saying it here, represent three different civilizations that are bound and entwined in some ways and in some ways very, very different,” said Gimple. “The place they’re from is one of those places.”

The series stars Annet Mahendru (‘Tyrant’, ‘The Americans’) as Huck, Aliyah Royale (‘The Red Line’) as Iris, Alexa Mansour (‘SEAL Team’, ‘#SquadGoals’) as Hope, Nicolas Cantu (‘The Amazing World of Gumball’, ‘Lego Star Wars: The Freemaker Adventures’) as Elton, and Hal Cumpston as Silas.

The as-yet-untitled drama comes from ‘The Walking Dead’ writer/producer Matt Negrete, who serves as Showrunner, and co-created the project with Scott Gimple, CCO of The Walking Dead Universe. The series is produced by AMC Studios.

The new series set in the world of ‘The Walking Dead’ will premiere in Spring 2020 on Amazon Prime Video across Asia-Pacific, the Middle East, Africa, and Europe (excluding Spain and Portugal). The series will be available in North and South America, Spain and Portugal on AMC.
