ITV has renewed ‘Gone‘ for a second six-part series, with Eve Myles (The Guest, Hijack) returning as the tenacious Detective Sergeant Annie Cassidy. And this time, she’s got a rather formidable new suspect in her sights, played by Keeley Hawes (Miss Austen, Scoop), as acclaimed screenwriter George Kay returns to deliver another gripping psychological mystery.
The renewal follows a hugely successful first series, which racked up an impressive 31 million streams on ITVX, making it one of the platform’s biggest new drama launches. With critics also praising the series, including The Guardian calling it ‘the most engrossing drama we will see this year’, it’s perhaps not surprising that ITV wants another helping of Kay’s twisty storytelling.
For Series 2, Annie Cassidy will find herself investigating a very different kind of suspect. Hawes joins the cast as Dr Ruth Manning, a highly respected and dedicated paediatric surgeon working at Bristol’s Makeway Hospital. However, beneath her seemingly impeccable professional reputation, there may be something rather darker lurking.
As Annie begins digging into a series of historical crimes, Ruth comes under suspicion of concealing the truth, potentially believing that keeping certain secrets is ultimately in the best interests of her patients. It’s a fascinating premise, particularly when the person at the centre of the investigation appears to have genuinely good intentions, even if her actions might suggest otherwise.
Speaking about returning to the role, Eve Myles commented:
“I can’t wait to get back to Annie! A very special project and character. I’m really excited to explore a new story with a brilliant cast!”
Series creator and writer George Kay, whose credits include Hijack, The Long Shadow and Lupin, is equally enthusiastic about returning to Annie’s world, particularly with the opportunity to work with Hawes.
“I’m thrilled to be back in the world of DS Annie Cassidy, played by Eve Myles, who brings such wit and depth to all her roles. This time she’ll be trying to find the truth about the character of Ruth Manning, a high-end paediatric surgeon played by the brilliant Keeley Hawes, who I’ve hoped to work with for so long and now finally get the chance.”
It’s certainly turning into a busy period for Keeley Hawes! Alongside joining ‘Gone’, she was recently announced as a new addition to the second series of Sky’s action thriller ‘Prisoner’, starring opposite Izuka Hoyle. And that’s not all, as she’s also returning for Season 2 of the Prime Video thriller ‘The Assassin’, which premieres Friday, 6th November 2026. Between those three dramas, Hawes certainly isn’t going to have much time to put her feet up!
ITV’s Director of Drama, Polly Hill, praised the phenomenal response to the first series and confirmed that the new story will once again explore the emotional fallout of a family coming apart under the pressure of a police investigation. As with the original series, the focus won’t simply be on uncovering what happened, but also on understanding the complicated people caught up in the mystery.
The drama remains partly inspired by the book To Hunt a Killer and the real-life experiences of former Detective Superintendent Julie Mackay and ITV Crime Correspondent Robert Murphy, both of whom continue to serve as consultants on the production.
Behind the scenes, the second series will once again be co-produced by New Pictures and George Kay’s Observatory Pictures, with Willow Grylls, Matt Sandford and Kay serving as executive producers. Filming is scheduled to take place in Bristol during 2027.
With Myles back as Annie Cassidy, Hawes joining as her latest investigative challenge, and Kay once again handling the scripts, ITV certainly has the ingredients for another compelling crime drama. And given how well the first series performed, there should be plenty of viewers eager to see what secrets Annie uncovers next.
‘Gone‘ Series 2 will premiere on ITV and STV, with streaming available on ITVX and STV Player. Filming begins in 2027, although a UK premiere date has not yet been announced.
