Netflix has released the official trailer for ‘Trinity‘, a new political conspiracy thriller from Jed Mercurio, the man behind ‘Line of Duty’ and ‘Bodyguard’. Starring Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Richard Madden, the seven-part series arrives this December, promising dangerous secrets, political intrigue and potentially catastrophic consequences for the entire world.
And if there’s one thing we’ve learned from Mercurio’s previous work, it’s that trusting anyone is usually a terrible idea…
The thriller follows Commander Katherine Decker, played by Gugu Mbatha-Raw (‘Loki’, ‘Surface’), a heroic US naval officer serving as second-in-command aboard the USS Kansas, a nuclear submarine carrying enough firepower to cause devastation on an unimaginable scale.
Her life takes an unexpected turn when she develops a connection with Webb Preston, the charismatic US Secretary of Defense, played by Richard Madden (‘Bodyguard’, ‘Citadel’). A former technology executive with an ambitious vision for America’s future, Webb appears determined to prevent World War III. Unfortunately, there’s the small matter of a potentially terrifying secret agenda.
As Katherine becomes increasingly entangled in Webb’s world, she discovers a mysterious top-secret programme code-named Trinity. She must decide whether the man she’s growing close to is genuinely trying to save the world or might actually be its greatest threat.
For Katherine, duty has always come first. However, her growing feelings for Webb threaten to complicate everything, particularly when the fate of millions could be hanging in the balance.
Mercurio describes the series as blending “high-octane action with a nail-biting conspiracy thriller,” drawing inspiration from one of his favourite films, No Way Out.
“I love watching thrillers as much as I enjoy making them,” he explains. “One of my all-time favorites is No Way Out. I wanted to create an action thriller set around the Pentagon with a high-stakes conspiracy to challenge a heroic naval officer.”
And what better setting for that conspiracy than a nuclear submarine?
“The ballistic nuclear submarines in the US Navy are the most powerful weapons ever created,” Mercurio says. “They can hide in the ocean depths undetected for months and carry the firepower to wipe out entire countries. There’s no deadlier or more claustrophobic setting for a thriller.”
A ‘Bodyguard’ Reunion With An Impressive Cast
One of the biggest attractions of ‘Trinity’ is the reunion between Mercurio and Madden, who previously worked together on the hugely successful BBC thriller ‘Bodyguard’. Given the twists, betrayals and political machinations that made that drama such compelling television, it’s an exciting combination to have back together.
“He’s such a talented and dedicated performer who elevates every script,” Mercurio says of Madden. “His performance as Secretary of Defense Webb Preston is sure to keep audiences guessing right up until the end of the season.”
Alongside the two leads, the impressive supporting cast includes Marcia Gay Harden (‘So Help Me Todd’) as Margaret Vandenburg, a powerful businesswoman whose family has significant political influence.
They’re joined by JD Pardo (‘Mayans M.C.’) as Lieutenant Commander Tom Reyes, Bruce Greenwood (‘The Fall of the House of Usher’) as Special Agent Eric Colby, Robert Wisdom (‘Barry’) as Admiral Griff Tatum, and Kirk Acevedo (‘Lioness’) as Captain Jock Campbell.
The ensemble also features Ben Cotton (‘The Night Agent’) as Special Agent Jake Ryan, James Remar (‘Dexter: Resurrection’) as President Paul Barnard, Jason Ralph (‘The Magicians’) as Brooks Vandenburg, and Mark O’Brien (‘City on a Hill’) as Dr. Brian York.
Behind the scenes, Mercurio serves as writer, showrunner and executive producer alongside Jimmy Mulville for Hat Trick Mercurio and Wendy Mericle. Michael Cuesta (‘Homeland’) directs the first two episodes and also executive produces.
With nuclear weapons, international political conspiracies, a potentially dangerous romance and a government official who may or may not be plotting something rather unpleasant, ‘Trinity’ certainly has all the ingredients for another gripping Mercurio thriller. And with all seven episodes arriving together, this could be one to clear your diary for!
‘Trinity‘ Season 1 premieres Tuesday, 1st December 2026 on Netflix UK and Netflix US, with all seven episodes available at launch.
