FX Renews ‘Mayans MC’ For Season 3

The bikers of Mayans MC will be riding back onto TV after FX announces the drama has been renewed for a 3rd Season, albeit without co-creator Kurt Sutter.

Co-created by ‘Sons Of Anarchy’s  Kurt Sutter and ex-biker-turned-filmmaker Elgin James, the show continues the saga in a post-Jax Teller world. EZ Reyes (JD Pardo – ‘Revolution’, ‘East Los High’) is fresh out of prison and a prospect in the Mayan MC charter on the Californian/Mexican border. EZ must carve out his new outlaw identity in a town where he once was the golden boy who had the American Dream within his grasp.

“We’re happy to continue telling the story of Mayans M.C. with our partners at Fox 21 and excited that Elgin James has earned the opportunity to become the series’ showrunner,” said Nick Grad, President, Original Programming, FX Entertainment. “Kurt Sutter identified and chose Elgin as his partner on the show from the outset and Elgin has been instrumental to the success of the series, leveraging his experience and creative vision to make Mayans M.C. with this incredible cast, crew and creative team.”

A few weeks ago Sutter revealed he had been fired from the series after he “ruffled a few mouse ears”, as he so wonderfully put it. Disney, who now owns the FX network, claimed he had created an environment of “hostility and favouritism” on set, which he strongly refutes. He says the only people he had upset were the new Disney execs, and they wanted him gone. Sutter was already stepping back from the series, with James taking over as the lead showrunner. “I knew that a white guy shouldn’t be the voice of a Latin culture drama,” he commented in a recent interview.

“Keeping this vibrant series strong is a huge priority to everyone at Fox 21 Television Studios, FX Productions and of course FX, which has been a spectacular home and platform for both Mayans M.C. and Sons before it,” adds Fox 21 TVS President Bert Salke.

The cast also includes Edward James Olmos (‘Battlestar Galactica’, ‘Dexter’), who plays Felipe Reyes, father of EZ. He is the once strong Mexican patriarch, crushed by bullets and hard labour, who struggles to keep his past buried and lead his sons down a lawful, righteous path. Other cast members are Sarah Bolger (‘Into the Badlands’, ‘Once Upon a Time’), Clayton Cardenas (‘American Crime’), Richard Cabral (‘Lethal Weapon’, ‘American Crime’), Michael Irby (‘SEAL Team’, ‘True Detective’, ‘Taken’), Raoul Trujillo (‘Jamestown’, ‘The Blacklist’), Antonio Jaramillo (‘Shades of Blue’, ‘Dallas’) and Carla Baratta.

Mayans MC airs on BBC Two in the UK. There is no UK premiere date yet for Season 2, but our best guess would be early 2020 (Season 1 aired in February 2019). We’ll let you know when we hear more.
