Geektown Awards – Best New & Returning Comic Book Series

We are sticking with the geeky categories for the next awards as we come to the Best New & Returning Comic Book Series. The last few years both these categories have been really close things between the top 3 slots, but this year we had a couple of clear winners. Here are the comic book dramas you loved the most.

Best New Comic Book Series

Nominees: Pennyworth – Starzplay, Raising Dion – Netflix, Swamp Thing – Amazon Prime, The Boys – Amazon Prime, The Umbrella Academy – Netflix, Titans – Netflix, Watchmen – Sky Atlantic

Bronze: The Umbrella Academy – Netflix

Silver: The Boys – Amazon Prime

And the Gold goes to …

Winner: Watchmen – Sky Atlantic

The battle for Bronze and Silver was so close, with only 0.2% making the difference, but there was one show taking a clear lead to land Gold, and that was Watchmen.

When Damon Lindelof announced he was making a series based on Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ groundbreaking and seminal graphic novel, there was a mixture of joy, raised eyebrows and outright concern across fandom. Especially when he said this would be a “remixed” version and a “new, more contemporary story…”, but also promised it would not trample over the original book. People were understandably sceptical, but he pulled it off in spectacular style.

Lindelof manages to write and create a new world which not only connects to the original but still maintains the beats and soul of that classic book. It is a masterwork of writing by someone who clearly loved the source material, with some amazing performances both in front of and behind the camera. Whilst Lindelof has maintained the show was a self-contained one-off series, there may be some possibility of him coming back to it if he can find a story which would work as well as this season. Personally, I’m happy to have this one season as a brilliant standalone drama… although I wouldn’t complain if he decides to do more.

Best Returning Comic Book Series

Nominees: Agents of SHIELD – E4, Arrow – Sky One, Gotham – E4, iZombie – Netflix, Legends Of Tomorrow – Sky One, Supergirl – Sky One, The Flash – Sky One, The Punisher – Netflix, The Walking Dead – Fox

Bronze: Gotham – E4

Silver: Agents of SHIELD – E4

And the Gold goes to …

Winner: The Walking Dead – Fox

This is the one category where nothing has changed, with the top 3 shows in exactly the same as the previous year! Whilst some may be surprised to find The Walking Dead taking the top slot again, Season 10 of the zombie drama has really got its groove back, and that is mainly thanks to showrunner Angela Kang.

Taking over the reins as showrunner for Season 9, Kang breathed new life into the series, despite having to cope with a multitude of challenges, such as losing it’s leading man and other cast members. She vastly improved the pacing and plotting of the show, and that has continued into Season 10. Yes, I know it’s viewing figures are down on AMC in the US, but it is still their highest-rated show, and a hugely valuable property for the network. Alongside sister show ‘Fear The Walking Dead’, they are now introducing a third show, ‘The Walking Dead: World Beyond’, which airs on Amazon UK this Spring, and we also have those Rick Grimes movies coming at some point too, which sees Andrew Lincoln return.

If you dropped out of ‘The Walking Dead’ in previous seasons, this year is a great time to jump back on the zombie train. You might also want to check out The Walking Dead UK Podcast which we co-host with the guys over at Entertainment Talk.

The Walking Dead‘ Season 10 part 2, premieres Monday, 24 February 2020 at 9pm on Fox UK.
