Taika Waititi To Co-Write & Direct New Star Wars Movie

I hope you’re all having a Happy Star Wars Day, and the folk at Disney are celebrating with the announcement that the utterly fabulous Taika Waititi will co-write and direct a brand new Star Wars feature film!

Waititi, who recently won the Best Adapted Screenplay Academy Award for ‘Jojo Rabbit’, will be joined on writing duties by Academy Award nominee Krysty Wilson-Cairns, who received a BAFTA Award for Outstanding British Film of the Year on the three-time Oscar-winning film, ‘1917’.

This is not Waititi first outing in a Galaxy Far Far Away… He previously voiced the bounty-hunter droid IG-11 for ‘The Mandalorian’, along with directing the final episode of Season 1. You might have noticed that hilarious exchange between the two scout trooper, which was pure Waititi humour. He is also pretty at home under the mouse ears of Disney, having directed and acted in ‘Thor: Ragnarok’, and is set to direct the upcoming ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’.

In other Star Wars news, Disney has confirmed Leslye Headland (‘Russian Doll’, ‘Bachelorette’) is currently developing a new untitled Star Wars series for Disney+, which she will write, exec produce, and serve as showrunner. As we previously reported, Headland’s drama is said to be a female-centric series that takes place in a different part of the Star Wars timeline than other projects. There is no news yet on what Waititi’s film may be about.

Alongside Headland’s new show, Disney+ has ‘The Mandalorian’ Season 2 currently in post-production, along with two other previously announced upcoming series: one based on Cassian Andor’s life prior to the events of ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’ and another following the adventures of Obi-Wan Kenobi between ‘Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith’ and ‘Star Wars: A New Hope’.

Release dates for both Waititi’s and Headland’s projects have not yet been announced. ‘The Mandalorian’ Season 2 is currently due later in 2020.

As it is Star Wars Day, let’s finish this post with a musical treat… May The Fourth Be With You…
