‘Supernatural’s Jensen Ackles Joins ‘The Boys’ For Season 3!
Jensen Ackles is going from dealing with the ‘Supernatural’ to the “super-powered” as it’s announced the (nearly) ex-Dean Winchester will rejoin his former boss, Eric Kripke, in ‘The Boys‘ Season 3!
From ‘Supernatural’ and ‘Timeless’ creator Eric Kripke alongside Evan Goldberg & Seth Rogen, ‘The Boys’ is a fun and irreverent take on what happens when superheroes – who are as popular as celebrities, as influential as politicians and as revered as Gods – abuse their superpowers rather than use them for good. As the powerless take on the super-powerful, The Boys embarked on a heroic quest to expose the truth about The Seven, and Vought – the multi-billion dollar conglomerate that manages these superheroes and covers up all of their dirty secrets.
In a role which seems perfect for him, Ackles will play Soldier Boy, the original superhero. After Soldier Boy fought in World War II, he became the first super celebrity and a mainstay of American culture for decades.
Jenson announced the news on his Instagram account posting “I keep wondering what I’ll do….when @cw_supernatural finally ends this year. Then it hit me,” accompanied by a video of him flipping through a copy of ‘The Boys‘ graphic novel to the dulcet tones of Elvis singing the song “Soldier Boy” (see below).
Kripke then released a statement saying “When I was a child, I had a crazy, impossible dream – to provide Jensen Ackles with gainful employment. I’m happy to say that dream has come true. Jensen is an amazing actor, an even better person, smells like warm chocolate chip cookies, and I consider him a brother. As Soldier Boy, the very first superhero, he’ll bring so much humour, pathos, and danger to the role. I can’t wait to be on set with him again, and bring a bit of ‘Supernatural’ to ‘The Boys.’” (I have no doubt Kripke is correct on the chocolate chip cookies part).
‘The Boys’ was renewed for a 3rd Season back in July, although Although it’s not clear when that will arrive due to the global pandemic. During a Comic-Con@Home panel, Seth Rogen joked “Don’t be surprised if you see a lot of superheroes in hermetically sealed outfits that do not allow any of their breath to interact with anyone else’s breath. It’s just a wardrobe choice, it has nothing to do with the current climate!” This went on to jokes about new members of The Seven – “Biohazard”, “Social Distancing” and “The Cough”.
Whilst filming of the ‘The Boys’ Season 3 is a little while off, we do have Season 2 landing on Amazon Prime early next month. Before then, Ackles has to finish up his ‘Supernatural’ duties alongside Jared Padalecki, as the duo film the final episodes of the long-running drama which were delayed due to the pandemic. For those of you wondering what Padalecki is doing next, he will be starring in the new CW show, ‘Walker’, a reboot of the ‘Walker, Texas Ranger‘ series.
For ‘The Boys’ Season 2, Amazon is trying something new with the broadcast schedule. Rather than dropping everything at once, they are taking a note from Apple’s book, only releasing the first three episodes on Friday, 4th September 2020. New episodes will then be available each Friday culminating in an epic season finale on 9th October 2020. The reason given by Kripke is that there is “so much crazy sh*t this season, we wanted to give the audience a chance to absorb and recover!”
In addition to the upcoming second season, Amason is also launching a new aftershow, ‘Prime Rewind: Inside The Boys’ to run alongside the new schedule. This will be hosted by actress & comedian Aisha Tyler, and will unpack each episode, dig into the affecting themes and big ideas that underpin the world, and feature exclusive behind the scenes footage. The series will debut Friday, 28th August 2020, with a look back at season one, a week before the launch of Season 2 on Amazon Prime Video.

‘The Boys‘ Season 2 premieres Friday, 4th September 2020 on Amazon Prime with episodes 1 to 3, then the rest of the season will premiere weekly on Fridays.
