The Best Mini-Games In Bigger Video Games

Ahh, mini-games… Those little added extras within larger games which become such massive time-sinks you end up playing until 2am. You know you should be advancing the main story to save the girl or take down the bad guy… but one more hand of cards won’t hurt… Sure, Joker might be about to release a deadly toxin, but you just need to work out where Riddler stashed those trophies! Here is our list of some of favourite mini-games within larger games.

Star Trek Online – Dabo!

Gambling isn’t something you would usually associate with ‘Star Trek’… until the introduction of ‘Deep Space 9’s lovable rogue Quark, and his Dabo tables. Dabo is a game of chance developed by the Ferengi and is a cross between a slot machine and roulette. The game makes an appearance in Star Trek Online, allowing player the chance to win some Gold-Pressed Latinum to spend on shiny new gear! Of course, if you would like to try your hand at gambling in real life, check out this bethard bonus code.

Dabo involves a roulette-type wheel containing 36 slots and a number of symbols. On each spin, the player bets whatever amount they desire on 3 symbols. Much like a fruit machine, how much you win depends on the which combination of symbols come up, and how much you staked. The biggest payouts come from winning a Dabo, which is when 3 symbols or colours match.

Red Dead Redemption II – Cards, Dominoes & Five Finger Fillet

RDR2 has a suite of minigames, including cards, dominoes & five finger fillet. For those of you into cards, you can play both Blackjack and Poker, which can be found in Rhodes, Blackwater, the Van Horn Trading Post, the Saint-Denis saloon, and sometimes at your own campsite. Another game which pops up at the camp and various places around the map is Dominoes, although if you fancy getting out into the world, you can also go to the park in Saint-Denis. Lastly, for the more adventurous amongst you, try betting your hand (quite literally in this case) on a game of “five finger fillet”, which involves stabbing a knife in between your fingers as fast as possible in a set sequence… not for the squeamish!

Grand Theft Auto V – Sooo Many Mini-Games!

Ever since Grand Theft Auto went from 2D to 3D, the list of mini-games in the GTA series has just grown and grown. GTAV continues that tradition, letting you spend hours playing around in Los Santos without actually touching the main story. Fancy a relaxing round of golf? Head to Los Santos Golf Club. If darts is more your speed, head to the Yellow Jack Inn. If you fancy getting up in the air, go to the International Airport and get your pilot’s license… Or you could just buy a parachute, and find a really tall building to jump from! Back down on the ground, you can play a round of tennis, or take part in a triathlon. You could improve your aim at the shooting range, or head out for some hunting, then calm down with some yoga! As this is GTA, there are of course a bunch of races you can take part in, or “borrow” a taxi, and pick up some fares.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Gwent

The Witcher 3 does have a few different mini-games, including fistfights and horse racing, however, there is one which was so good, they spun it out into its own standalone esport series… Gwent.

Gwent is a card game of choices and consequences, where skill, not luck, is your greatest weapon. The turn-based card game pits two players against each other, with each game taking three rounds. Each player must play one card each turn from a deck of cards, placing the card in one of the two tactically distinct rows – either melee and ranged. The objective is to get more points than your opponent and win 2 out of the 3 rounds.

What makes the game so clever and addictive are the card decks. Each deck can be handcrafted by the player from a variety of possible factions, each with a different playstyle, and a multitude of possible deck compositions. The better combination of cards you can stack in your deck, the better chance you have of winning. However, the game is well balanced, meaning if you don’t refine your deck based on your opponent, you could come unstuck very easily!

If you fancy giving Gwent a try, you can get it for free on PC, PS4 and Xbox One.
