The One: Netflix Announces Cast & Sets March Premiere For Sci-Fi from ‘Misfits’ creator Howard Overman

Netflix has announced the cast for their upcoming adaptation of John Marrs’ novel The One, from ‘Misfits’ creator Howard Overman, along with a March premiere date.

‘The One’ is set five minutes in the future, in a world where a DNA test can find your perfect partner – the one person you’re genetically predisposed to fall passionately in love with. No matter how good your relationship, which one of us can honestly say we haven’t thought about whether there is someone better out there? What if a hair sample is all it takes to find them? The idea is simple, but the implications are explosive. We will never think of love and relationships in the same way again.

The cast includes Hannah Ware (‘The First’, ‘Hitman: Agent 47’) as Rebecca, the ambitious and impulsive CEO and founder of MatchDNA, a company that pairs people with their soulmates; Dimitri Leonidas (‘Riviera’, ‘Genius’) as James, Rebecca’s best friend and the co-founder of MatchDNA until he abruptly departed at the height of the company’s success – and only she knows why…; Amir El-Masry (‘Industry’, ‘Jack Ryan’) as Ben – best friends with James and Rebecca, though he’s always seen Rebecca as more than a friend; Stephen Campbell Moore (‘War of the Worlds’, ‘The Last Post’) as Damian, one of MatchDNA’s investors; Wilf Scolding (‘Game of Thrones’, ‘Martin’s Close’) as Ethan, Rebecca’s partner – together, the loved-up face of MatchDNA; Diarmaid Murtagh (‘Devils’, ‘Vikings’) as Connor, Rebecca’s Head of Security at MatchDNA; Lois Chimimba (‘A Discovery of Witches’, ‘Trust Me’) as Hannah, besotted with her husband Mark but haunted by the fear that he will eventually leave her for a MatchDNA partner; Eric Kofi-Abrefa (‘Harlots’, ‘Humans’) as Mark; a friendly, relaxed journalist and Hannah’s husband; Pallavi Shard (‘Beecham House’, ‘Retrograde’) as Megan, a beautiful and charismatic new acquaintance of Hannah’s; Zoe Tapper (‘Liar’, ‘Safe House’) as Kate, a straightforward and sceptical Detective Inspector at the Metropolitan Police; And Gregg Chillin (‘A Discovery of Witches’, ‘Da Vinci’s Demons’) as Nick, an irreverent Detective Sergeant who works closely with Kate.

The show comes from Howard Overman who serves as creator, writer and exec producer. Along with the much-beloved ‘Misfits’, Overman also created the series ‘Crazyhead’ for Channel 4/Netflix, BBC drama ‘Atlantis’, and the sci-fi show ‘Future Man’ which ran on Syfy UK. Urban Myth Films is the production company behind the project, in association with StudioCanal. Johnny Capps and Julian Murphy join Overman exec producing for Urban Myth Films.

Side note – if you’re thinking “This plot sounds awfully familiar…”, you may have been watching AMC’s anthology series ‘Soulmates’, which recently launched on Amazon UK, and appears to have an almost identical setup! However, ‘The One’ is based on an original novel by John Marrs, and was commissioned in 2018, before the AMC show. It is also an ongoing drama rather than an anthology, so will play out very differently despite having a similar premise.

The One‘ will premiere Friday, 12th March 2021 on Netflix UK and worldwide.
