‘Grey’s Anatomy’ & ‘Station 19’ Both Renewed For New Seasons

Not that this was ever really in doubt, but ABC has renewed Grey’s Anatomy for Season 18 alongside a 5th Season for Station 19 the US broadcaster has announced.

The renewals of both these shows was pretty much a given one way or another. The only question mark over the renewal was whether all three original ‘Grey’s castmates – Ellen Pompeo, Chandra Wilson and James Pickens Jr. – whose contracts were up at the end of this season, would sign on again. Thankfully for fans, the trio will return. It’s also interesting to note, this has not been presented as a final season either for ‘Grey’s, which is currently the longest-running medical drama on US tv, so we could see another renewal next year. However, it seems the trio of actors have only extended the contract by one year, so it will be up to them again in 12 months whether they continue.

Station 19 and Grey’s Anatomy have done an incredible job of honouring real-life heroes by giving audiences an unflinching look at one of the biggest medical stories of our time,” commented Craig Erwich, president, Hulu Originals & ABC Entertainment. “Krista and her team of writers have continued to deliver the compelling and compassionate storytelling that is a hallmark of these shows, and created some of the year’s most-talked-about moments in television. We’re so grateful to our talented casts and crews for their extraordinary work that connects with viewers everywhere, and we look forward to sharing even more defining moments with our fans next season.”

In addition to the actors returning, Krista Vernoff, the mastermind behind the Grey’s/Station 19 universe, will continue as executive producer and showrunner on both series, which are produced by ABC Signature. Disney TV Studios signed the EP up for a new contract back in March.

“The writers, directors, casts and crews of Grey’s Anatomy and Station 19 worked so hard to bring these shows to life this past season,” adds Vernoff. “Keeping each other safe on set while paying tribute to the front-line heroes and first responders has been a challenge and a privilege. I’ve been truly blown away – particularly by our tireless crews – as they reinvented the TV-making wheel. Thank you to ABC and ABC Signature for the support and extraordinary partnership through this unprecedented season. We are so grateful for the opportunity to tell more stories.”

Grey’s Anatomy’ and ‘Station 19’ are both currently airing on Sky Witness in the UK.
