FOX Cancels ‘Prodigal Son’ After 2 Seasons

Malcolm Bright might be good at catching killers, but unfortunately can not escape the hatchet of FOX, as the US network cancels Prodigal Son after 2 Seasons.

The drama starred Tom Payne, (‘The Walking Dead’) as Malcolm Bright, a former FBI profiler who ends up working with NYPD to solve their most puzzling murders, due to his… unique insight… into the minds of serial killers… Due to the fact his father, Dr. Martin Whitly (Michael Sheen, ‘Masters of Sex’, ‘Frost/Nixon’), was one of the best, a notorious serial killer called “The Surgeon”.

This seems to have been a bit of an agonising decision for FOX, as there was a lot of love for the show internally, but unfortunately, the numbers just didn’t add up. Whilst it got off to a strong start in season one, those numbers plummeted in the second season, where it was sitting at the bottom of the network’s ratings for scripted drama still on air. There is no news yet as to whether Warner Bros. TV, who make the show, will try and shop it around to other broadcasters, or they could decide to move it over on to HBO Max, but that may be wishful thinking.

Alongside Payne and Sheen, the series starred Lou Diamond Phillips, Aurora Perrineau, Frank Harts and Keiko Agena. The second season also saw Catherine Zeta-Jones join the cast.

The series is produced by Berlanti Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television and FOX Entertainment. Chris Fedak and Sam Sklaver created the series, and are executive producers, showrunners and writers on the show. Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter also serve as executive producers.

Prodigal Son‘ Season 2 premieres Wednesday, 9th June 2021 at 10pm on Sky One.
