ABC Cancels ‘For Life’, ‘Rebel’, ‘Mixed-ish’, ‘American Housewife’ & ‘Call Your Mother’
Like something out of a twisted horror movie, the mouse is out for blood, as ABC hacks its way through 5 shows in a Friday night massacre.
The Disney-owned US broadcaster has cancelled legal drama ‘For Life’ after 2 Seasons, ‘Black-ish’ spin-off ‘Mixed-ish’, also after 2 Seasons, sitcom ‘American Housewife’ after 5 Seasons, and newbie shows ‘Rebel’ starting Katey Sagel, along with sitcom ‘Call Your Mother’, after one season each…
Whilst the Nicholas Pinnock-led ‘For Life’ had some love at the network, it was sitting at the bottom of ABC’s ratings, so the cancellation had been somewhat predicted. However, Sony Pictures TV, which co-produces the with ABC Signature are likely to try and shop it around to find a new home, so there is a slim chance of a last-minute reprieve. The series aired on Sky Witness in the UK.
‘Black-ish’ spin-off ‘Mixed-ish’ which follows a young Rainbow Johnson as she recounts her experience growing up in a mixed-race family in the ‘80s, had also been struggling in the ratings, so again, the cancellation was not a huge suprise. With the main show also ending next season, that will leave ‘Grown-ish’ as the last “-ish” standing.
‘American Housewife’ starred Katy Mixon as wife and mom Katie Otto, who struggles to fit in with her wealthy and snooty new neighbours in the town of Westport, Connecticut. The show had been doing okay-ish in the ratings, however, it had hit the 100 episode mark needed for syndication in the US, plus there had been some behind-the-scenes issues, with one of the stars leaving the show sighting the “toxic work environment”. Whatever the reason, Disney has decided it’s not returning.
‘Call Your Mother’, which starred Kyra Sedgwick as an empty-nester mom, who decides reinserts herself into the lives of her grown children, had been one of the lowest-rated shows on the network. Although, Sedgwick herself did take a dig at ABC when she revealed the cancellation earlier today saying to fans “You guys have been so wonderful to tune in every week, or every other week or every two weeks!”
The biggest surprise in this list is probably the cancellation of ‘Rebel’. Inspired by the life of Erin Brockovich today, the series stars Katey Sagel as Annie “Rebel” Bello is a blue-collar legal advocate without a law degree. The show had been underperforming, especially given it has ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ as a lead-in. However, the show was the first to be created by Krista Vernoff, who is showrunner on both ‘Grey’s and ‘Station 19’, so you would have thought that might have brought her some leniency… apparently not…
It’s not all bad news from ABCtoday . Earlier, they did renew dramas ‘The Rookie’ and ‘A Million Little Things’, both of which return for 4th Seasons, alongside three comedies – ‘The Goldbergs’, which lands a 9th Season, ‘The Conners’ for Season 4, and ‘Home Economics’, which lands a 2nd Season. They previously had renewed ‘Big Sky’, ‘The Good Doctor’, ‘Grey’s Anatomy’, ‘Station 19’ and ‘Black-ish’ (for a final season).
