Premieres Coming To Disney+ UK & STAR In August 2021
Disney has released the latest update of new and returning shows coming to Disney+ and STAR in the UK this August, and it’s a nice mix of old and brand new series for you to enjoy. Here is a breakdown of all the premieres landing on the streaming service next month.
Disney+ UK & STAR August Highlights
Marvel’s What If…? – 11th August 2021
The big Marvel launch in August will be the first animated MCU series, with Marvel’s ‘What If…?‘. The series reimagining famous events from the films in unexpected ways. Marvel Studios’ first animated series focuses on different heroes from the MCU, featuring a voice cast that includes a host of stars who reprise their roles. The series is directed by Bryan Andrews; Ashley Bradley is head writer.
The Walking Dead, Season 11 – 23rd August 2021
Outside of Disney-owned properties, the 11th and final season of ‘The Walking Dead‘ moves to STAR On Disney+ following the closure of FOX UK.
Previously on ‘The Walking Dead’, our survivors confronted past demons and combated new threats, with friendships and relationships suffering from the mounting collateral damage that is the apocalypse. Alexandria is severely compromised, left a former shell of the home it once was from the carnage and devastation left behind by the Whisperers.
Now all who live in Alexandria struggle to refortify it and feed its increasing number of residents, which include the survivors from the fall of the Kingdom and the burning of Hilltop; along with Maggie and her new group, the Wardens. Alexandria has more people than it can manage to feed and protect. Their situation is dire as tensions heat up over past events and self-preservation rises to the surface within the ravaged walls.
They must secure more food while they attempt to restore Alexandria before it collapses like countless other communities they have come across throughout the years. But where and how? More haggard and hungrier than ever before, they must dig deeper to find the effort and strength to safeguard the lives of their children, even if it means losing their own.
Meanwhile, unbeknownst to those at Alexandria, Eugene, Ezekiel, Yumiko, and Princess are still being held captive by mysterious soldiers who are members of a larger and unforthcoming group…
Cruella – 27th August 2021
On the film side, ‘Cruella’ gets a release direct on to Disney+ (no premiere access needed!). Academy Award winner Emma Stone (‘La La Land’) stars in a live-action feature film about the rebellious early days of one of cinema’s most notorious – and notoriously fashionable – villains, the legendary Cruella de Vil. Cruella, which is set in 1970s London amidst the punk rock revolution, follows a young grifter named Estella, a clever and creative girl determined to make a name for herself with her designs. She befriends a pair of young thieves, and together they are able to build a life for themselves on the London streets. One day, Estella’s flair for fashion catches the eye of the Baroness von Hellman, a fashion legend, played by two-time Oscar® winner Emma Thompson (Howards End, Sense & Sensibility). But their relationship sets in motion a course of events and revelations that will cause Estella to embrace her wicked side and become the raucous, fashionable and revenge-bent Cruella…
Only Murders in the Building – 31st August 2021
Original series ‘Only Murders in the Building‘ comes from the minds of Steve Martin, Dan Fogelman (‘This Is Us’) and John Hoffman (‘Grace and Frankie’) and follows three strangers (Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez) who share an obsession with true crime and suddenly find themselves wrapped up in one. When a grisly death occurs inside their exclusive Upper West Side apartment building, the trio suspects murder and employs their precise knowledge of true crime to investigate the truth.
As they record a podcast of their own to document the case, the three unravel the complex secrets of the building which stretch back years. Perhaps even more explosive are the lies they tell one another. Soon, the endangered trio comes to realize a killer might be living amongst them as they race to decipher the mounting clues before it’s too late.
Alongside Steve Martin, Martin Short, Selena Gomez, the series also stars Aaron Dominguez and Amy Ryan. Martin and John Hoffman exec produce along with Short, Gomez, Jamie Babbitt, Dan Fogelman and Jess Rosenthal.
Other Notable August Launches On Disney+ UK & STAR
Along with those highlights above, there are a few more notable UK premieres in the full list (see below.) The recently cancelled ‘Black-ish’ spin-off ‘Mixed-ish‘ (18th August), which follows a young Rainbow Johnson as she recounts her experience growing up in a mixed-race family in the ‘80s, gets its UK premiere this month. The also cancelled animated series ‘Bless the Harts‘ (11th August), which follows a group of Southerners who are always broke as a joke and struggling for the American dream of status and wealth, will have the entire first season dropped as a boxset, with the second season airing weekly.
For those of you who are fans of The Beatles, ‘McCartney 3,2,1’ (25th August) sees Paul McCartney sits down for a rare, in-depth, one-on-one with legendary producer Rick Rubin to discuss his groundbreaking work in the fab four, the emblematic 70s arena-rock of Wings and his 50 years and counting as a solo artist.
