Marvel D23 Panel Roundup: ‘Secret Invasion’, ‘Werewolf By Night’ Trailers, ‘Thunderbolts’ Revealed Other News!

After Lucasfilm, D23 moved onto Marvel! We did get a couple of trailers for upcoming Disney+ shows, but not a huge amount of other info on the film side of things! Here is what they presented.

Secret Invasion

The upcoming Secret Invasion series landed its first trailer, which sees Nick Fury (aka Samuel L. Jackson) back on Earth, kicking ass and taking names… which is important when your planet has been invaded by Skrulls!

The event series, which is based on the popular comic book event, will see Jackson reprise his role as Nick Fury alongside Ben Mendelsohn as the Skrull Talos, who first met in ‘Captain Marvel’, and last saw hanging out on a spaceship at the end of ‘Spider-man: Far From Home’.

As you can see in the trailer, the cast also includes Cobie Smulders return as Maria Hill, alongside Martin Freeman as Everett K. Ross, and Don Cheadle as James “Rhodey” Rhodes. Dermot Mulroney, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Olivia Colman, Emilia Clarke, Killian Scott, Christopher McDonald, and Carmen Ejogo also star.

Secret Invasion‘ does not have an exact premiere date, but will air on Disney+ in 2023.

Werewolf By Night

The other trailer to land was for ‘Werewolf By Night’ a “special presentation” which will land on Disney+ next month.

The one-off special comes from first-time director (and longtime composer) Michael Giacchino and is a proper “old school” black-and-white TV horror special. The story follows Jack (Gael García Bernal), who tries to protect his family, his small town in Arizona, and himself after becoming the new Werewolf by Night. The special also stars Harriet Sansom Harris and Laura Donnelly.

‘Werewolf By Night’ will premiere Friday, 7th October 2022 on Disney+.

Thunderbolts

Back at SDCC, Marvel revealed that ‘Thunderbolts’ would be the closing movie for “Phase 5” of the MCU. For those of you that don’t know the comics, this “exciting new group of heroes” is usually a team made up of reformed villains, so that did beg the question, who will be in the film… and now we know!

The group will consist of Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova (aka the new Black Widow), Sebastian Stan as Bucky (Winter Soldier), David Harbour as Alexei Alanovich Shostakov (Red Guardian), Wyatt Russell as John Walker (US Agent), Hannah John-Kamen as Ava Starr (Ghost), Taskmaster, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (who is possibly the person who put the team together!)

“It tells you a lot when the Winter Soldier is the most stable hero of the bunch,” commented MCU boss Kevin Feige…

Thunderbolts is set to release on 26th July 2024 in cinemas.

Other News

Those were really the main headlines from the panel, but there were a few other little bits and pieces announced along the way:

  • ‘Fantastic Four’ – Dissapointly, no casting announcements, but Kevin Feige confirmed that Matt Shakman (‘WandaVision’) would direct.
  • ‘Loki’ Season 2 – Ke Huy Quan joins the cast. The ‘Goonies’ and ‘Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom’ made a high-profile comeback earlier this year in the wonderful ‘Everything Everywhere All At Once’. As he joined Tom Hiddleston, Owen Wilson and Sophia DiMartino on stage, Ke joked “I’m so confused right now. Is this not the Indiana Jones panel?”
  • ‘Echo’ & ‘Daredevil’ – Vincent D’Onofrio will be returning in both series and was joined on stage by Alaqua Cox and Charlie Cox. He also revealed that the hearing members of the ‘Echo’ cast had been learning ASL, saying it has been “an incredible experience.”
  • ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: QuantumMania’ – Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly and Jonathan Majors took to the stage, and revealed the film has a direct tie to ‘Avengers: The Kang Dynasty’. They did show a trailer, although it has not been released online.
  • ‘Captain America: New World Order’ – Shira Haas and Tim Blake Nelson join Anthony Mackie in his first outing on the big screen as Captain America. Haas will portray “Sabra” and Nelson will play “The Leader”.
