Peacock Renews Seth MacFarlane’s ‘Ted’ For Season 2

Comedy makes a surprise return

by Dave Elliott

Despite being originally marketed as an “event series” Peacock has renewed Seth MacFarlane’s Ted for a 2nd Season the US streamer has announced.

A prequel to MacFarlane’s movies, the series is set in 1993, and Ted the bear’s (Seth MacFarlane – ‘Family Guy’, ‘The Orville’) moment of fame has passed. He’s now living back home in Framingham, Massachusetts with his best friend, 16-year-old John Bennett (Max Burkholder – ‘Parenthood’), along with John’s parents, Matty and Susan (Scott Grimes – ‘The Orville’, and Alanna Ubach – ‘The Flight Attendant’, ‘Guilty Party’) and cousin Blaire (Giorgia Whigham – ’13 Reasons Why’, ‘The Punisher’). Ted may be a lousy influence on John, but at the end of the day, he’s a loyal pal who’s always willing to go out on a limb for friendship.

It isn’t a complete shock that Peacock wants more, given the show season one was Peacock’s most-watched original series and the #1 Original Streaming Comedy in the U.S. for more than two consecutive months (based on Nielsen rankings.) However, a renewal decision was not without its issues. Being a live-action/CGI hybrid, it’s an expensive (i.e. estimated $10M an episode expensive!) and time-consuming series to produce. Ultimately though, Peacock has decided it is worth the money. It also sold extremely well overseas, which may have influenced the renewal decision. For example, in the UK, it gave Sky its biggest launch of a comedy series in over 20 years.

‘Ted’ comes from Executive Producer/Writer/Director/Co-Showrunner Seth MacFarlane. Paul Corrigan and Brad Walsh also are Executive Producers/Writers/Co-Showrunners. Erica Huggins, Alana Kleinman, Jason Clark, Aimee Carlson exec produce for Fuzzy Door Productions. The series is produced by UCP, a division of Universal Studio Group, Fuzzy Door and MRC.

Ted‘ Season 1 can be found on Sky and streaming service NOW in the UK, and on Peacock in the USA. If you want to keep track of this or any other show, you can add it via our Never Miss system, and you’ll be notified when it gets a UK premiere date.
